  • Giacomo Antonio Marastoni was a painter of Italian origin born in 1804 in Venice. Here he spent the first ten years of his career as a painter. In the 30ties of the 19th century, after a short stay in Klagenfurt and Vienna he appears in Bratislava for the first time. The painting “Woman sitting in front of a mirror” which can be seen in Bratislava City Gallery comes from this period. The group portrait of the Scherz family likewise. Through his paintings which were characterized by bright colours and a very pleasant overall impression Marastoni has quickly gained large popularity. In 1836 he moved to Budapest. Here he would establish the first painting academy in Ugria (Hungaria). Most famous of his students was Karoly Lotz. Marastoni’s son was also following his example.
