The Basilica di Santa Maria delFiore (English: Basilica of SaintMary of the Flower) is the mainchurch of Florence The cathedralcomplex, located in Piazza delDuomo, includes the Baptisteryand Giottos Campanile. The threebuildings are part of the UNESCOWorld Heritage Site covering thehistoric centre of Florence and area major attraction to tourists visitingthe region of Tuscany.
  3. 3. Dedicated to St. John theBaptist patron saint ofFlorence, the Baptistery wasconstructed in the course ofthe XI-XIII centuries on a siteof a Roman-age edifice,domus. The building has anoctagonal plane, whichsymbolizes the religious ritualof baptism, and is faced inpolychrome marbles thegeometrical arrangement ofwhich is inspired by the classicRoman antiquity.
  4. 4. The Baptistery is enriched withthree splendid bronze doors,the first one, the South Door,was made by Andrea Pisanoin 1330-1336, the other twoare the work of LorenzoGhiberti, the North Door(1403-1424), and the famousEast Door described byMichelangelo as the Gate ofParadise (1425-1452)

  7. 7. Saint Zenobius (337–417)is venerated as the firstbishop of Florence. Thecolumn of San Zanobimarks the spot where amiracle is reputed to havetaken place
  8. 8. Such a large building wasrequired because vastcrowds attended theadministration of baptism,which in those days tookplace only twice a year. Itsform is octagonal, and theexterior is sheathed in whitemarble and green Pratomarble. The lower registerhas semi-pilasters, and theupper one polygonalcolumns supporting roundedarches. The third order, theroof and the lantern aretypical of the 12th century;the west end is closed by ascarsella or altar recess,added in the 13th century.The powerful guild ofCalimala (Cloth-Merchants)held the patronage of theBaptistery for centuries, andit was they whocommissioned themagnificent gilded bronzedoors, as well as many ofthe works of art inside.

  10. 10. The Baptistry iscrowned by amagnificentmosaic ceiling.The earliestmosaics, worksof art of manyunknownVenetiancraftsmen(includingprobablyCimabue), datefrom 1225. Thecovering of theceiling startedunder thedirection of theFranciscan friarJacopo Torritiand wasprobably notcompleted untilthe fourteenthcentury.
