  • The Sukhothai Kingdom (Thai: ราชอาณาจักรสุโขทัย ( pronunciation)) was an early kingdom in the area around the city Sukhothai, in north central Thailand. The Kingdom existed from 1238 till 1438. The old capital, now 12 km outside of New Sukhothai in Tambon Mueang Kao, is in ruins and has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage historical park. (wikipedia)
  • Thailand's Spirit Houses and Shrines: Throughout Thailand, one can see miniature houses standing next to homes, businesses, hotels, and even high-rise office buildings. These small structures are called spirit houses . Spirit houses are miniature dwelling places for invisible helpful spirits. Some say spirit houses are built for the spirits, such as guardian angels, that live in the land. Others believe the spirits own the land and must be given a better place to live than the house or building that will be built. Besides, individual spirit houses protecting homes, towns and cities each have their own protective spirit houses. Even the bustling city of Bangkok has a kind of spirit house that occupies an entire city block. It holds s a large pillar that marks the geographical center of the city.
  • Si Satchanalai was a city of the Sukhothai kingdom located close to the modern town of Si Satchanalai, which is 67km north of new Sukhothai via Highway 101. Situated 3 km to the south of ancient Si Satchanalai’s walls is Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat which is a large historic royal temple complex . It is also called Wat Phra Borommthat Mueang Chaliang or Wat Phra Prang , dates from the early 13th century, making it one of the oldest temples in the Si Satchanalai area and it is an important temple in Chaliang town.
  • Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat, Si Satchanalai Historical Park (Sukhothai, Thailand) An immense laterite prang on a square base marks the centre of the temple. There is a strong indication that the temple was built by the Khmers, but it was expanded and modified all through the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods. Major restoration work was carried out during the reign of King Boromat (1732 -1758) during the late Ayutthaya period. The temple is arranged in a linear plan running from east to west. There is a Khmer style structure with either a 4 Faced Brahmin or Bodhissattava Avalokitesvara figure over the top of the front entrance (east). Inside the main prayer hall is an impressive Buddha image with the gesture of Subduing Mara . On the left of the main image is the famous Walking Buddha . This Buddha image has been featured in many magazine publications. Behind the prayer hall, a steep staircase in front of the huge prang leads to a room where a reliquary is enshrined.
  • A second complex of temples and shrines is located on the west gate. In front of you is the ruins of a large??chedi ( Phra That Mutao ). Only the base and the lower part of the bell remains.
