The temple probably dates to the fourteenth centuryit was built on the south slopes of Mount Agung, the principalvolcano of Bali.
  • 4. This Mother Temple is actually acomplex made up of twenty-twotemples that sit on parallel ridges. Ithas stepped terraces and flights ofstairs which ascend to a number ofcourtyards and brick gateways thatin turn lead up to the main spire orMeru structure, which is called PuraPenataran Agung. All this is alignedalong a single axis and designed tolead the spiritual person upward andcloser to the mountain which isconsidered sacred.
  • 5. The main sanctuary of thecomplex is the PuraPenataran Agung. Thesymbolic center of the mainsanctuary is the lotus throneor padmasana, which istherefore the ritual focus ofthe entire complex. It datesto around the seventeenthcentury.
  • 6. A series of eruptions of MountAgung in 1963, which killedapproximately 1,700 peoplealso threatened Puru Besakih. The lava flows missed thetemple complex by meremeters. The saving of thetemple is regarded by theBalinese people as miraculous, and a signal from the gods thatthey wished to demonstratetheir power but not destroy themonument the Balinese faithfulhad erected.În 1963 erupţiile vulcanuluiAgung au ucis aproximativ1.700 de persoane ameninţândde asemenea şi Puru Besakih,şuvoiul de lavă curgând la doarcâţiva metri de el.
