IST’s Career Solutions Department provides students with resources that will enrich their professional development in regards to seeking internships and full-time jobs.
Our office provides services such as:
Job Posting System available to only College of IST students at University Park – questions? Please make an appointment with Lauren Wazontek.
Career Counseling – staff can help students explore different career paths and help align interests with potential careers.
Career –related events (Pro Expo, Future Forum, Dining Etiquette, workshops) – take advantage of all the opportunities that CS offers.
Interview skills – Students can schedule one hour mock interviews with Lauren or Madhavi (if seeking full time).
Resume reviews – There will be many opportunities students have to review their resumes…appointments with the CS staff, interactions with the Career Assistant Team – CAT ( a group of students who are trained by the CS staff to review resumes).
  • Pro-Expo: a job fair for college of IST students only! 45-60 companies will set up booths in the IST Building searching for both internship and full time candidates!
Future Forum: Think of it as a Science fair for companies…In the Spring semester, companies will demonstrate their latest technologies
Dining Etiquette : Learn how to dine in a business setting
CS offers many professional development workshops and also collaborates with Penn State Career Services

  • 1 internship credit = 300 hours
Absolutely important to make an appointment with the Internship Program Coordinator – Lauren Wazontek
  • At this point, instructor/presenter will introduce the students. Students will have two questions that they will talk about. The questions would be given to them a few days prior to the class. Brett and Ryan will speak during the first class.

    Internship Expectations-Brett
    Most Valuable tip/advice-Ryan
Getting involved – the key to placement success-Brett
Challenges students may face and how to overcome them-Ryan

Note: After the panel the student speakers will stay to help facilitate the next activity.
Students will then hand the floor over to the instructor/presenter who will then introduce the Scavenger Hunt Activity

Note: Class will be split into teams of 5-6 students. Scavenger hunt questions will be passed out to each team. Student speakers will walk around the room to answer questions/offer insight.
Each team will respond to one scavenger hunt question and the bonus question if they have time
Have each team report on their question to generate discussion
  • Conclusion Wrap-up:
    5 Minutes
    Questions
Discussion of Assignment (pending on Faculty Approval)

    Homework Assignment
Upload resume into Compass and get it approved by the Career Solutions Department
Resume should be submitted by October 1st***
CS Team will approve class resumes by end of semester (generally sooner)
** my only concern by saying should be uploaded and approved by end of semester is that many students will wait until the last day at 11:59PM to submit their resume and then expect our team to get their resumes approved by the time their grades need to be submitted. I think they should get partial credit for turning it in by Oct 1st so that can give us ample time to give quality feedback.**
