  6. 7. NEW YORK TIMES Preparing to Sell E-Books, Google Takes on Amazon Google appears to be throwing down the gauntlet in the e-book market. In discussions with publishers at the annual BookExpo convention in New York over the weekend, Google signaled its intent to introduce a program by that would enable publishers to sell digital versions of their newest books direct to consumers through Google. The move would pit Google against Amazon.com, which is seeking to control the e-book market with the versions it sells for its Kindle reading device. Google's move is likely to be welcomed by publishers who have expressed concerns about Amazon's aggressive pricing strategy for e-books. Amazon offers Kindle editions of most new best sellers for $9.99, far less than the typical $26 at which publishers sell new hardcovers. In early discussions, Google has said it will allow publishers to set consumer prices

Microsoft Zings Google In First Ad For Bing Ad Age &quot;From this moment on, search overload is officially over,&quot; declares a TV ad from Microsoft that launches its campaign to compete head-on against Google in the search-engine wars. Titled &quot;Manifesto,&quot; the 60-second spot features montages of Google-owned YouTube clips juxtaposed against some news clips about the financial crises. It makes the point that its &quot;Decision Engine&quot; can &quot;cut through the c[rap].&quot; Gayle Troberman, gm for advertising and customer engagement at Microsoft, tells Abbey Klaassen that the ad attempts to tap into the zeitgeist and elicit an emotional response about a concept that, on its face, is not emotional. &quot;Search has been about number of results and access to everything, and when you talk to people, they don't want everything anymore,&quot; according to Troberman. &quot;Less is the new more. ... [People] want the right things for them.&quot; Microsoft will drive home the point about too much information -- or &quot;search overload syndrome&quot; -- in a second round of ads that breaks in a week or two.
