  • Companies are struggling with the relative high cost if IT infrastructure, specifically, the cost of IT management and administration which has been outpacing the cost of the devices themselves by 4 or more times. A related pressure is the difficulty in being able to quickly deploy or make changes. In response, enterprises are turning to new business and technology models to drive down the cost of IT.One approach is to adopt public cloud services, such as ‘platform as a service’. With the growing choices of cloud solutions for business available online, line of business decision makers can work around IT teams who are not responsive enough. Savings can be realized in just buying what is needed like a utility, with economies of size realized from higher levels of units or usage purchased. Of course, public cloud services are not always appropriate for highly customized applications, those with specific security needs or those considered business-critical.Another approach has been the adoption of open source, which can drastically reduce software license cost. Though typically less refined than packaged applications, customers feel that they are just paying for needed functionality. Plus, the newer generation of developers became familiar with open source in college, so finding required expertise is not necessarily a barrier.And another valuable response to reducing the cost of IT is the adoption of converged infrastructure. This is purchasing prevalidated or integrated infrastructure solutions, that include the server, networking, storage and perhaps even the business application. These consolidated solutions, though sometimes consisting of components from multiple vendors, are optimized to work together -- improving performance, uptime, as well as making deployment faster and management simpler. Reduced time required for design and testing, as well as ongoing administration and troubleshooting, all reduces the total cost of ownership.
  • FlexPod is the converged infrastructure solution from NetApp and Cisco.FlexPod accelerates the transformation from infrastructure silos to a virtualized, shared environment with prevalidated, standardized, scalable building blocks that leverage a next-generation data center solution from Cisco, NetApp, and leading OS and hypervisor partners.The solution is prevalidated integrated, so customers can count on an effective infrastructure, with rapid, repeatable deployment, and centralized and simplified management.FlexPod includes Cisco Unified Computing System (Cisco UCS) server systems, which provide programmable, virtualized compute with an open API and support for orchestration tools. It has its own policy-based management with service profiles and self-integrating components. And works with the Cisco Nexus series switches for a unified fabric, virtualization awareness, simple scaling and high performance I/O.FlexPod also features NetApp FAS storage, along with clustered Data ONTAP. FlexPod stands apart from similar solutions thanks to truly unified storage that can be virtualize into pools and nondisruptively managed. FlexPod also uses OnCommand storage software that delivers the built-in storage efficiencies of Data ONTAP, integrated data protection and intelligent management and automation.
  • To reduce the cost of technology, IT teams are shifting to converged infrastructure or “CI.” Market adoption of CI is currently 4% of total IT spend, growing to 13% in 3 years (source, IDC).By adopting CI, these teams are able to accelerate the traditional approach of months of planning, procuring, deploying and testing of equipment. Other key drivers for CI adoption include lowering cost, simplifying IT, and reducing risk.Customers have attested to reducing time to deploy applications from months to just weeks, with FlexPod.The FlexPod converged infrastructure solution is the fast forward button for IT infrastructure.
  • FlexPod is the most efficient converged infrastructure solution, thanks to the efficiencies at each level of the stack. The advanced design of Cisco UCS delivers high computing and memory density, ideal for consolidated, virtualized environments. In addition, the integrated management allows for easy management of multiple enclosures and servers through a single graphic interface.The Cisco Nexus switches enable a unified network, supporting FCoE, which eliminates the need for multiple sets of adapters, cables, and switches for LAN vs. storage traffic, which can result in as much as an 80% reduction in ports and cabling.Last but not least are the industry leading data efficiencies of the NetApp unified storage platform. NetApp storage comes with native deduplication, thin provisioning, and compression, as well as other features such as space-efficient Snapshot copies and FlexClone volumes, which drastically increase storage data efficiency. We guarantee that customers will use 50% less storage than with a similar competitor’s systems. Customers are shrinking their data center space requirements by 50% and more thanks to the efficiencies found in FlexPod.
  • One of the key values of FlexPod is the architectural flexibility - the ability to scale and deploy apps in minutes because it is virtualized infrastructure. The key software-driven components of FlexPod allow for the pooling,abstraction and consumptionof IT resources in a highly flexible, efficient way. NetApp FAS storage with clustered Data ONTAP enables the creation of a single storage pool across multiple physical systems. Similarly, Cisco UCS can also pool compute resources; service profiles in Cisco UCS Manager enable consistent policy-based Cisco UCS deployments.FlexPod is typically used for virtualized environments, though it can be deployed for bare-metal solutions. FlexPod can abstract resources including virtualized servers, storage and network, and enables stateless computing for scale-out environments. Automation within the Cisco UCS and enabled through OnCommand management and higher level orchestrators provides for dynamic scalability, as well as app anddata mobility.Element level resources are consumed through a number of means, including service catalogs that allow for rapid and automated service-oriented administration of resources (e.g., Gold, Silver, Bronze), which can be aligned with business-oriented service levels and SLAs. Each element in the FlexPod architecture has APIs to enable this type of development or integration with management products to enable multi-tenant self-service and/or user-driven resource consumption.
  • FlexPod supports a broad ecosystem of orchestration partners to simplify implementation of a private cloud.FlexPod also supports a broad ecosystem of cloud management partners for full private cloud functionality. By using an orchestrator such as Cisco UCS Director (formerly Cloupia), it simplifies the interface into FlexPod and together with our cloud partners we enable full stack orchestration across the physical layer, virtual layer, service layer and application layer. A data center manager can pull from a catalog of standard service offerings and with a single operation provision the entire environment. These tools also support service analytics, showback/chargeback and self-service portals.An orchestrator like Cisco UCS Director provides centralized orchestration and automation across these environments leveraging APIs from the element managers. Service catalogs are created in the element managers. These APIs and the service catalogs can be selectively exposed by the resource owner to be centrally orchestrated by the orchestrationtool. Cisco UCS Director was the first vendor to get classified as a FlexPod validated management partner and went through extensive lab testing and validation before eventually being acquired by Cisco. But FlexPod can also be centrally managed and automated using other orchestration and ITSM products such as VMware vCenter, Microsoft System Center, Abiquo, Fluid Operations, BMC, CA and even open tools sets such as OpenStack and CloudStack.TransitionTogether these capabilities reduce operational or opex costs even as the environment scales.
  • FlexPod architecture scales to support most enterprise environments.FlexPod reference architectures can be sized for small enterprises or very larger enterprises. The architecture is consistent from small to large with the same capabilities, technology and management tools. A company can scale a small environment to a very large environment without ever forklifting technology, changing management tools or methodologies. Reference designs come with sizing tools to make this easy and risk-free.Transition One challenge with a unified architecture is that most applications have unique requirements.
  • FlexPodalso can flex based on workload. FlexPod traditionally has been intended to be a shared infrastructure platform that allows resources to be scaled while maintaining the same design and implementations.The FlexPod sizing guide provided details on how to optimally support different uses. For instance, an entry level configuration is good for Microsoft applications such as Exchange or SharePoint.Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) workloads such as VMware View require a configuration with more compute and higher IOPS.Dev and test environments need more computing and memory resources but less data storage than others. Whereas data protection and backup use requires the maximum storage capacity while still maintaining optimal I/O performance across the backup infrastructure.
  • FlexPod continues to expand business-critical workload support, adding to the already broad validations to date.And unlike other converged infrastructures, FlexPod support both bare-metal and virtualized workloads. Validated applications include Microsoft enterprise applications, Citrix XenDesktop, VMware View, SAP, and Oracle RAC database. Validated bare-metal designs include VMware vSphere, Windows Hyper-V, RedHat Enterprise Linux, Oracle Linux and OVM.Optional security capabilities include secure separation and secure multi-tenancy.About 40 FlexPod validated architectures have been delivered to date with between 6 and 10 new ones per quarter planned in the coming year.

While previously we've been claiming in the 600s, we can now say with confidence that we have over 900 joint partners who can deliver FlexPod. Additionally, at the time of this writing we have 63 FlexPod Premium Partners (see attached draft directories).
  • The Cooperative Support Model represents a multivendor engagement that includes not only NetApp and Cisco, but also an ecosystem of software partners such as VMware, Microsoft, Citrix, Redhat, Oracle, SAP, and others. Vendor relationships between executives, business units, and engineering teams help make sure customers get what they need to keep their mission-critical data center infrastructure up and running smoothly.The customer’s IT staff chooses which vendor to call upon based on their initial assessment of the problem’s origin. Today, only about 2% of all FlexPod cases are escalated to a second vendor, because 98% are resolved by the first vendor contacted. And, with support staff cross-trained to identify common FlexPod issues and use formal collaboration processes, when cross-vendor escalations are necessary, they are quickly and seamlessly resolved.Transition:But the Cooperative Support Model doesn’t only facilitate customer success directly. It also helps authorized resellers provide consistent and excellent support for their FlexPod customers.Note: The Unified Support process shown in this slide applies only to strategic alliance partner solutions such as FlexPod for VMware.Service workflow for problem resolution: The customer opens a support case with the company suspected to be the cause of the problem (Company A). The first company contacted, Company A, is designated the owner of the case through resolution. If Company A determines that the issue may be another partner’s solution component, the following cooperative support action is taken:Company A support hosts a phone call between Company A, the customer, and Company B to assist the customer in opening a secondary support request with Company B.Once the customer has opened the secondary service request with Company B, Company A and Company B work collaboratively on the issue until the problem is resolved.Case ownership remains with Company A (the original vendor) until the case is resolved or the customer approves the transfer or closure of the case.Note: NetApp cooperative support is available for SupportEdge Premium Customers. Customers must have active support contracts with all vendors.
  • FlexPod has expanded to now include several solution categories within a single platform family.New FlexPod categories were created to distinguish solutions for significantly different uses and customers:FlexPod Express replaces ExpressPod and is for the midmarket and branch offices.FlexPod Datacenter is for enterprises and service providers, typically used as a shared application platform.FlexPod Selectis for high-performance or large data capacity workloads, including big data analytics.FlexPod maintains a consistent advantage with this approach as all categories still share the same storage vendor, compute, network architecture, and support – within the single platform.
  • Because of the increasing number of new reference architectures being developed, we now promote the FlexPod program with quarterly launches that feature batched payloads of multiple reference architectures. This slide shows the recent releases from summer 2013, which promote FlexPod performance, scalability, availability for business-critical applications, and demonstrated the broadening support for business workloads. The new naming taxonomy combines the category name such as FlexPod Datacenter with the validated application, such as NetApp SnapProtect.
  • Cisco, NetApp, and our FlexPod partners have seen dramatic success since FlexPod was introduced in November of 2010.This includes over 2500 FlexPod customers, over 70 public references, and many more peer-to-peer reference customers, located across 35 countries around the world.According to Gartner, FlexPod dominates the certified systems/converged infrastructure market with more than 80% share. IDC calls FlexPod “one of the most complete private cloud architectures available.”FlexPod is typically used as a shared infrastructure platform for multiple workloads. Based on recent data, we see that IT is using FlexPod for virtualized workloads (90% of the time), VXI/VDI (10-20% of the time), for Microsoft apps (50-60%), and Oracle and SAP (20-30%). These total to more than 100% reflecting multiple workloads on a single platform.
