    1. Monica Hamburg Speaking Engagements Reference Letters
    2. July 9, 2009 To Whom It May Concern: LETTER OF REFERENCE RE: Monica Hamburg I am pleased to write this letter of reference for Monica Hamburg. Monica was referred to me by several colleagues in the Vancouver area who specialize in the field of social marketing, particularly online campaigning. Following a series of conversations, I invited Monica to present a workshop at a provincial gathering that I organized entitled MORE POWER TO YOU: A conference for community & environmental th th activists organizing to protect public power in British Columbia (Vancouver: October 4 and 5 , 2008). Monica is knowledgeable social media consultant. She provided a comprehensive, dynamic, and user- friendly, multi-media presentation to more than 160 registered conference participants, along with simple instructions on how to build an online, grassroots campaign to increase public awareness about key social issues—in our case, to stop the government’s privatization of BC’s energy sector. The conference attendees were largely unfamiliar with the capabilities of social networking tools such as Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter but Monica did an excellent job making these concepts clear. She showed how a simple digital video camera, a computer, and a high-speed internet connection can be used to create a compelling campaign that can foster powerful social change. Feedback from conference attendees on evaluation surveys specifically identified Monica’s ability to simplify sophisticated information. Monica is also an entertaining and dynamic speaker. She used her sense of humour to hold the audience’s attention, which made learning unfamiliar concepts easy and fun. I would have no hesitation recommending Monica Hamburg as a consultant or speaker for similar conferences or events. Sincerely, Melissa Davis, Executive Director BC Citizens for Public Power 604-207 West Hastings St. Vancouver, BC V6B 1H7 tel: 604.681.5939 fax: 604.681.2127 execdirector@citizensforpublicpower.ca www.citizensforpublicpower.ca & www.bcguardians.ca
    3. September 2009 Re: “Flickr For Good” Monica Hamburg rocked our Net Tuesday meetup earlier this year with a super useful & inspiring talk on how to use social media for change. Monica engaged the audience from the get-go - with excellent case studies, a keen sense of stage humor, and a sincere & contagious passion for engaging communities online. Monica Hamburg is a social media evangelizer in a very real sense - I'd recommend her in a heart-beat for more talks, panels, workshops - and other opportunities to spread the webby word! Best, Joe Solomon
    4. October 1, 2009 Erica Hargreave Interactive Storyteller Ahimsa Media http://ahimsamedia.com erica@ahimsamedia.com (604) 785-3602 To Whom It May Concern, I have had the great pleasure of knowing Monica Hamburg for the past 2 years. During this time Monica has helped me to host and organizing two Bridging Media Events. She was an amazing asset to the team and helped ensure that the events ran smoothly and were a worthwhile educational experience for the participants. This past March, Monica sat on a panel with me at the Woman In Film Festival New Media Day. She was a wonderful addition to the panel, as she brought both humour to it and useful and insightful information to the participants. I have enjoyed listening to Monica speak on numerous occasions at WIFF New Media Day, Chicks Who Click and Third Tuesday. She is phenomenally organized, does her homework and includes applicable examples, is witty and knows her material. I'd highly recommend Monica Hamburg as a speaker. Yours sincerely, Erica Hargreave BSc, BEd
    5. Northern Voice is a 2-day social media conference. Started in 2005 as Canada's first blogging conference, Northern Voice sells out each year in expanding numbers. The session Monica moderated was entitled “Who are you? Defining yourself in the online world” and the number of attendees for the talk was approximately 125. Audience feedback for Monica's session at Northern Voice was enthusiastic. Monica's moderation of the panel struck the right balance between investigation and momentum -- digging into important topics while keeping the discussion engaging and flowing. Participants both on the panel and in the audience felt comfortable and had fun. Monica provides a great energy and enthusiasm to her public speaking. She makes poorly understood social media topics accessible and fun. - James Sherrett
    6. July 24, 2009 RE: Monica Hamburg Monica Hamburg was one of the speakers at MyCharityConnects, a two-day conference in Toronto that focused on how charities can use cost-effective online technology solutions, specifically social media tools, for both marketing and fundraising. The goals of the conference were to: Reduce the fear and frustration of technology often felt by small and medium sized charities; Engage the charitable sector in an interactive manner to demonstrate the value and ease of technology and how it can assist in their efforts; Provide opportunities for individuals to network and learn best practices from one another; and Build the capacity of the sector through their increased use of technology. With four thought provoking keynote sessions, and 25 interactive and informative workshops, over 250 attendees, be they beginners or seasoned users, acquired tips, tricks and new knowledge to enhance their online presence. Ms. Hamburg conducted three sessions at the conference, one keynote and two workshops. The former was entitled Twitter, Facebook and You Tube, Oh My! Understanding Philanthropy 2.0, and provided an introductory overview of some of the social media tools being used. This was well received by the attendees, many of whom were unfamiliar with the basics of Web 2.0. The two workshops, presented to smaller groups of approximately 50 people, were entitled, Game On: An Interactive Game on Social Media and How Tweet It Is: Creating a Following on Twitter. Both sessions provided attendees with more in depth knowledge of the respective topics and were well attended, informative and humorous. Ms. Hamburg will undoubtedly become increasingly popular as a speaker with the growing interest that charities have in social media. Sincerely, Zenia Wadhwani Director, Program Development
    7. July 7, 2009 I am the founder of Chicks who Click, a one-day Social Media Conference for Women incorporating networking, education and empowerment with like-minded women, achieving great heights in the area of Social Media. Chicks who Click are a community of women that are growing and flourishing through Social Media. Our vision was to create a conference, a think tank, if you will, for women to come together to listen, teach, experiment and connect with like-minded women face to face, stay connected through Twitter, Blogging, Facebook or Flickr, and to empower each other in achieving great heights in our careers and journeys; and lastly, to collaborate our efforts as women in the male-dominated field of technology. We launched the conference is Boulder, CO in January and are now taking it on the road to several cities in 09. We were just in Vancouver, BC, June 27, where we had a fantastic line-up of speakers. Monica Hamburg was one of the presenters who educated the group on Twitter: Tweeting, Following & Finding. She had a great presentation that was humorous, informative and very enlightening. We had a mix crowd of about 25-30 women, some just entering the social media space and some that are already fully embedded. The feedback was very positive, as everyone walked away with at least one useful nugget of information. The positive aspects of social media and the ever changing, ever evolving space are that everyone is continuing to learn and Monica was a fantastic instructor! I would highly recommend her to speak at any level of audience. Sincerely, Denise Smith Chicks who Click, Founder Dsmith@metzger.com
    8. Monica Hamburg moderated the “New Media: Collaboration in Business session” at the 2008 Massive Technology Show which is Canada’s largest B2B2 technology tradeshow and conference. The panel was attended by 40 people and addressed “how online social mediums like blogs, wikis, Facebook, YouTube, and podcasts are helping businesses grow.” Monica handled her duties as moderator with ease and humor, prompting an excellent discussion between the panellists and taking cues from the audience which created an exciting and engaging experience. She clearly understands social media and the right questions to ask. The response to the session was very positive, we had numerous comments about this panel and specifically many compliments on Monica’s knowledge, professionalism and stage presence. I would highly recommend Monica as a moderator. Sincerely, Christine Mann Chief Operations Officer, Massive Technology Show
