In the Spring Semester the Interior Design Sophomore Studio , College of Human Ecology , East Carolina University took on the challenge of designing houses that are sustainable and more varied than plans that might have been generated to date. This is in keeping with the University's committment to be a leader in engaged scholarship as well as community service. The students were excited that their work would be put to use. So what we offer here are 18 new plans for Habitat Houses that can be used by anyone who might profit from the student work. Each house has an imaginary family that the student designers kept in mind in view of the design profession that they will soon join is a service profession: there will be clients for all of the projects that these students will design as practicing interior designers. While these families are fictional , essentially placemarkers in the process of learning to design for others you are welcome to substitute your family, friends or members of the community for the prototype client and use the organizational or program drawings, the plans, elevations and sections and scchedules to extend the student work. 3. SINGLE FATHER MOVES INTO HAPPY HABITAT HOME
 A family from upstate New York consists of a young 27-year-old father
and his 5 and 7 year olds sons Chase and Cody. The single father,
Solomon James, survived his late wife who passed away not too long
ago. The father cannot afford to keep his children in their home due
to the aging of the house. He is a musician who works mostly from
home due to his wife’s absence and the economy as well. Solomon
makes a living by writing music and doing small gigs at clubs when
time permits. Solomon loves engaging in physical activities as well.
Besides music his other hobby includes his love for cooking.. After his
wife died, friends of the family noticed that Solomon was having a
hard time maintaining the home. Being that his family was all down
South, and that his wife’s parents were deceased, he was truly on his
own. Community families took it upon themselves to write to Habitat
for Humanity to inquire about building a new home in a better location
for this single father and his children. After they wrote the letter, the
family friends encouraged Solomon to apply online, insisting that he
would be accepted and he was!

4.  It brings me much joy and peace to watch my sons grow. As they get older it amuses me at how
much they remind me of their mother and my self. My oldest, Cody is growing up faster than
ever. He will be starting second grade next year. His adventurous ways remind me of myself
when I was younger, nothing scares that kid! He is quite the basketball player as well. He loves
all sports really, hopefully our new home will allot him some room to play and practice outside!
My youngest Chase, will forever be the memoir of my wife! He more artistically gifted like my
wife father, and musically gifted like me. It pleases me to see him engage in his art and creative
side; he enjoys cooking with me as well! They are quite the characters! I can’t believe Chase is
starting school this year!
 I got another email from Habitat today saying that our home staring going up today. I am happy
to hear the news and to know that plans are going accordingly. This means my sons and I will
be settled in before the new school year. The email also stated that they had a few additions to
the floor plan and that I would be please with them! I am to report to complete my portion of our
home soon and I can’t wait! They spoke about the concept of our new home somehow they are
going to relate prairie lands to the elements in our home. This could be done by putting built in
furniture and adapting colors from the prairie lands.
 I visited and worked on our new home this week! I never knew how tedious the actual building
and designing processes of the home were! I saw that one of the new surprises to the home
was an extended driveway with a basketball hoop for my son Cody! I was enthralled to see how
considerate these people are to my kids and I! Being able to tell the boys that they will have a
new home soon is like talking about Christmas to them! They get so hyper over the new home,
neighborhood, and what it all my have to offer!
 More surprises awaited me this week when I went to work on our habitat home! I was pleased
to see some cabinetry of my late wife’s that was restored into an open pantry for our kitchen.
The cabinets were made by her father years ago before I even met her, and my wife loved them
especially after her father died. This addition truly touched my heart.

5.  I was told I was to complete my habitat hours not this coming week, but 2 weeks from now?
They also asked me to stay patient as I wait to see the house after minor changes in the exterior
construction of the home. I must admit I’m nervous for the changes, my home was already
perfect!
 It has been too long since I have been at the new place. I received an email saying the minor
construction and exterior changes went very well!
They also stated I’d be very pleased with changes. I guess only time will tell.
 Today was a great day. I worked on our home finally got to see the changes, and I’m so excited
for the boys first visit later this week. The habitat community has been so kind and good to us.
They blessed my home with little things here and there, I honestly couldn’t ask for more!
 Thankful is an understatement, today made me truly grateful for my life and the things in it! My
struggles with my wife’s death, leading up to now has truly made me stronger! Seeing my sons
grow into young men and seeing their strength through it all is truly remarkable too! I took them
to our new home today and they loved what they saw, especially the nicer neighborhood.
Although they could not go inside just yet, we enjoyed planting rose bushes in our memory
garden that the habitat community compassionately designed!
 I’m enthralled to be moving into our home next month, with only a little over a month before our
actual move in date I can’t seem to imagine what the home is going to feel and look like once it’s
all complete. The timing for this blessing from the Habitat for Humanity community could not
have been any better. We will be moving right before my sons start school giving me ample time
to settle in, and giving them a fresh start at a new home as well as new school!
 The days are growing smaller, although they seem to be longer in actuality as the time for move
in approaches. I get butterflies when I think of leaving the only home I have ever made with my
own family! It would seem almost impossible to see myself move without the empathy that the
Habitat community gave me, for the loss of my wife. Adding little feminine touches to our home
in her memory is the icing on the cake for me and my boys and we will forever be thankful!

8.  Design Concept: In the middle of North America is a hug area
of land, which was once covered with grasses and colorful wild
flowers. The French called the rolling plains of grass “prairie”
from the word for a meadow grazed by cattle. The prairies are
a type of grasslands dominated by herbaceous land and
grasses.
 Design Concept Statement: The newly designed Habitat
home for the James family is like and open prairie. He
simplicity, intimate size, firmness, and sturdiness of the home
will reflect the never eroding prairie lands. And like the family
who will be living there, the James home will reflect a close,
tight knit place that can grow along with the family.
 Color Psyche: The color pallet developed for this home was
done so purposefully. The consistent use of fresh greens was
done so to give off a calming effect, and to represent good
health, tranquility, and the power of healing. The browns are
used to give warmth to the space, along with pops of reds and
golden oranges for energy and feelings of warmth.
