How the Retractable Pool Cue works The cue has a red button on the bottom (butt) of the cue, which if held will retract the top of the cue (shaft). When the button is held, the level inside the cue retracts to where the shooter wants it. Once the shot is finished, the shooter can press the button to allow the lever to return to its original state
