OBJECTIVES By the end of today’s session, you’ll be able to: effectively search Summon and ERIC to find research articles for your Inquiry Research Project find resources for your practicum (math manipulatives, textbooks, science kits, children’s books, and more)
If there is time… find age / grade-appropriate online newspaper and magazine articles, encyclopaedias, primary sources, etc. in publicly-licensed Knowledge Ontario databases
Finding articles Summon Search vs. Database Searching
Research topic I’ve heard that boys at the elementary level are often less interested in reading than girls. I’m interested in learning about how technology can be used to encourage boys to read. STEP 1. IDENTIFY (AND UNDERLINE) KEY IDEAS / KEYWORDS.
Step 2. Brainstorm synonyms

STEP 3. search summon Search Summon. Refine your results (for example, limit to journal articles, in English, published after 2005) Save your references.
Step 4. search specific databases If you don’t find the articles you need, try specific education databases such as: ERIC Education Full Text CBCA Education
Activity #2: Test yourself! Pick one of the following topics and find a relevant article in either Summon or ERIC: How bullying has changed in the past 10 years because of technology Blogs, Wikis, and websites: How they can improve communication with parents The use of iPads in special education
