  • 1. HISTORY Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891. Thevery first hoops Naismith used were peach baskets with nobottoms. The 10 foot height that is still considered regulationwas just happenstance. The very first basketball was actuallya soccer ball. It wasnt until 1929 that the basketball usedtoday was introduced.

At the Games in 1936 in Berlin, basketball joined the Olympic programme, where it has remained to this day. Women’s basketball debuted at the 1976 Games in Montreal.
