  22. 22. BASKETBALL : THE BALL The ball first purpose-built basketballs were madefrom panels of leather stitched together with a rubberbladder inside. A cloth lining was added to the leatherfor support and uniformity (identity). A molded versionof the early basketball was invented in 1942. From1967 through 1976, the American BasketballAssociation (ABA) used a distinctive red, white andblue basketball that is still seen from time to time. Formany years, leather was the material of choice forbasketball coverings, however in the late 1990s,composite materials were put forth and have rapidlygained acceptance in most leagues due to theirsuperior performance in harsh outdoor gameconditions. htt://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basketball_(ball)
  23. 23. BASKETBALL : THE BALLTODAYBalls are generally designated for indoor (generallymade of leather or absorbent composites), or all-surfaceuse (generally made of rubber or durable composites, also known as Indoor/Outdoor balls). Indoor balls tendto be considerably more expensive than all-surfaceballs due to cost of materials. In addition, brand new all-leather indoor balls must be "broken in" first to achieveoptimal grip before use in competition. Theabrasiveness of asphalt and the dirt and moisturepresent in an outdoor setting will usually ruin an indoorball within a very short period of time, which is why anindoor/outdoor ball is recommended for recreationalplayers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basketball_(ball)
  24. 24. BASKETBALL :BACKBOARD The top of the hoop is 10 feet above theground. Regulation backboards are 6 feetwide (72 inches) by 42 inches tall. Allbasketball rims (hoops) are 18 inches indiameter. The inner square on thebackboard is 24 inches wide by 18 inchestall. Fibre glass is what the backboards arenormally made out of. The fibre glass givesthe ball an extra spring.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backboard_(basketball)
  25. 25. BASKETBALL: BACKBOARDINFO The first glass backboard was used by the IndianaHoosiers mens basketball team at the MensGymnasium at Indiana University.[1] After the firstfew games at their new facility in 1917, spectatorscomplained that they couldnt see the game becauseof opaque wooden backboards. As a result the NurreMirror Plate Company in Bloomington was employedto create new backboards that contained one-and-a-half inch thick plate glass so that fans could seegames without an obstructed view. As a result, it wasthe first facility in the country to use glassbackboards. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backboard_(basketball)
  26. 26. BASKETBALL : time length In basketball, there are four quarterswhich each go for 10 minutes. At theend of each quarter, a buzzer goes ofwhich marks the time. There is a timekeeper which tells the referee how muchtime there is left in the game. Thisperson also keeps score and puts thescore on the board.
