Releasing potential of AR

  1. 1. Augmented Reality Releasing potential.
  2. 2. What is AR?  A technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user's view of the real world, providing a composite view.  Developed in 1990 by Boeing ◦ Allowing technicians to work without manuals on complex tasks.  Simply put: Adding another dimension to the real world!
  3. 3. Where is it used?           Games Military applications Advertising Sport The arts Healthcare Architecture Construction Entertainment Leisure and Tourism
  4. 4. AR v VR Augmented Reality AR is not Virtual Reality VR  VR is a computer generated environment to stimulate the senses. 
  5. 5. Examples
  6. 6. Video Examples
  7. 7. Why use it at the Academy?  Remove barriers ◦ Language and disability.  Increase independence ◦ Allowing the user to perform tasks that are normally difficult to access.  Access learning, training and skills. ◦ See how things work, where things go and try things without fear of mistake.
  8. 8. First trial  A display board in College.
  9. 9. College End of Year Newsletter All content created by the students  Layar embedded AR  Current stats:  ◦ 615 page views. 513 interactions, 38 different users
  10. 10. Problems  Time constraints to acquire the materials ◦ Video especially time consuming  Film, Copy to computer, Remove background, editing, finishing and uploading.  WiFi issues in certain areas around the campus  Cost
  11. 11. Student A Student A has not been engaging in class activities. They are educated on a 1-2-1 basis currently in a separate room.  Want to go back to class  AR will be developed to allow them to ‘look inside’ the class to see what is going on, where the students sit etc.  Slowly allowing re-integration. 
  12. 12. Next steps  Fully equipped filming room ◦ Broadcast quality camera ◦ Matte screen ◦ Dedicated editing suite Allows nearly all editing to be done onthe-fly.  Direct upload to our servers. 
  13. 13. Wider community  Restaurants and Eatery menus. ◦ You won’t eat it if you don’t know what it is!  Public Transport ◦ Bus destinations, timetables, fares ◦ Similarly for Trains, Planes  Shops ◦ Displays, explanation of goods/services  Local Adverts ◦ What’s happening etc.  Local news papers ◦ Main stories and headlines.
  14. 14. How easy is it? Create an account  Upload an Image  Add the AR (Video, sounds, images etc.)  Publish  Tell people!   Bear in mind you need to have the AR materials ready and saved somewhere to access!
  15. 15. Other AR Aurasma  Buildar  FreshAiR  Junaio  Layar  OnVert  MixARe (Open source) 
