  5. 5. Whilst the earthquake on February 22nd. 2011 was not as powerful as the<br /> earthquake on Saturday 4th September, 2010. The damage and death was<br />more extensive.<br />

  7. 7. The epicentre of the quake was much closer to the surface and to the City Centre.<br /> Around 5 kms below the surface and around 10 kms from the City Centre in February<br />.<br />
  8. 8. Whilst the September earthquake’s epicentre was around 40 kms from the city centre and 10 kms below the surface<br />
  9. 9.
  10. 10. The increase in death was partially caused, due to the time of day and day of the week<br />
  11. 11. The September earthquake happened early on a Saturday morning before the stores had opened<br />
  12. 12. The February earthquake happened during the lunch period on a weekday, when offices and stores were open. Leading to many more people in the city centre.<br />
  13. 13. Office workers, shoppers and visitors rushed to assist those trapped and injured<br />
  14. 14. Another reason for the extensive damage is due to buildings that had been weakened <br />By the earlier earthquake in September and subsequent aftershocks collapsed<br />
  15. 15. Liquefaction was also more of problem with the February earthquake<br />
  16. 16.
  17. 17. The damage was not only confined to the City Centre, suburban areas and surrounding<br />Countryside also felt the effects of the earthquake<br />
  18. 18. Christchurch’s historic Cathedral, which has survived previous earthquakes<br />Succumbed to the February earthquake<br />
