  • Principles of newspaper design The basics of planning a page
  • Every design starts with an idea
    • The idea can come from:
    • Another newspaper or magazine
    • Inside the designer’s head
    • Anywhere
  • Every page starts with a dummy
    • A dummy is a blank page with columns on it. The designer sketches on the dummy where the stories, headlines and photos will go.
  • A dummy is required!
    • You wouldn’t build a house without a plan. You wouldn’t play a game without planning the plays. You shouldn’t design a page without a dummy.
  • A dummy will get you from this: To this:
  • You start with a blank dummy.
  • Choose 1-3 stories for the page.
    • Make a list of the stories, headlines, photos and other elements for the page.
  • Draw in the stories in a module on the page.
  • Now open up a new Pagemaker or InDesign document.
    • Place the stories, photos, headlines, etc. on the page by following the dummy.
  • You’ve gone from a dummy to a page.
