As a follow up to step 1, showing how SharePoint works doesn’t do you end user any favors because they really don’t care! Instead, take SharePoint out of the equation and show a solution. Not, “Here’s how to use SharePoint”, but “Here’s a quick solution to your problem.”
Yep, it really is the best way to go about getting buy in. Ask someone how they are using Excel. Take the simplest spreadsheet they have and turn that worksheet into a real solution. You’ll be amazed at the response you’ll get.
Once you’ve provided someone with a solution, once you’ve solved a problem, let everyone know. It’s best to let the person who you worked with take credit and evangelize for you, but that’s another story.
I got this tip from Kat Weixel, coordinator of the End User Assessment Project at EUSP. Kat sets aside time blocks in chuncks of 15 minutes. Anyone can sign up for up to 4 chunks of her time during the week. Seems good to me…
At the Microsoft SharePoint Conference in Seattle, Lori Garcia gave a session to a packed house. She wasn’t famous or anything, but she had a real world case study of how she got end user buy in through simple solutions that you can do in a matter of minutes. She used the server logs to determine why people were leaving the company site and found that weather and stock quotes were two of the biggest reasons. As soon as she create some simple solutions in Content Editor Web Parts, she now had the audience attention on the site. Pretty slick.
Not sure why more people aren’t doing this, but you end users would LOVE to talk with you… if they just knew who you were. There is no simple way for end users to find out who manages a site and can help them solve a problem. Want immediate end user buy in from people who come to your site for the first time? Let them know who you are and how to contact you. Not too tough, right?
You’d be surprised and how little it takes to feed a champion. We’re not talking about Wheaties here, we’re talking about a basic “Thank You” and recognition for participating in your project. This goes WAY beyond SharePoint into the land of common courtesty. Comments, contributions, even questions, give you a chance to reach out and have a brief one-on-one with your potential “clients”. That’s what your end users are, really. Simply clients to whom you are providing a server, a basic service of solutions that happen to reside within SharePoint. I was shocked when I put my newsletter signup form on EUSP for the first time. I had always thought RSS was the way to go, directly feeding the content to people who cared enough to subscribe. I read somewhere that newsletter signups trump RSS by 4 to 1. I didn’t believe it. 13,500 subscribers later, I’m a convert.
People want to know how you solved a sticky problem in your department. Maybe it wasn’t hard, maybe it wasn’t brain surgery, but they want to know. You wouldn’t believe how many people turn me down when I ask them to write an article for NothingButSharePoint.com. “Oh, what I do is so easy, no one would really care.” Nope, not true. That’s how EndUserSharePoint.com become one of the biggest sites in the world for SharePoint. Simple solutions. No geekspeak. Your users don’t know a quarter of what you know, and you know nothing! It’s kind of weird when you think about it.
If the CEO answers a question on your site once a week, you’ve implicitly proven buy in from the top. Don’t overlook the power of this one. Go as high up the food chain as you can and expose it on the entrance page of your site.
SharePoint looks geeky when you open the box. A simple spiff up with some pictures will do wonders for getting end user buy in. Do a picture of the day, using employee pictures at the company party. Show pictures of the company buildings from different locations in the world. People want to see, people want to know what’s going on in the company. There’s no better way than a wide range of pictures and videos that recognize people within the company for the contributions they are providing.
It all comes down to one think: End Users don’t care about SharePoint, they don’t care about technology. They care about how to get their work done. If you can keep that in mind, you’ll be a SharePoint Rockstar in no time.
