  • 1. Crowsnest Pass Fires
  • 2.
    • On Aug. 2l, 2003 what had been a seasonal wildfire abruptly changed direction & transformed into a gigantic fire.
    • The fire burned over 20,000 hectares of forest and the wall of flames spanned 6km and reached 50m into the sky
    • This is the energy equivalent of an atomic explosion every 30 minutes
    Seasonal Fire Goes Wrong
  • 3. Affecting Lives
    • “ I didn’t know what to take. You start doing crazy things,” says Elaine Hruby a resident who had to be evacuated at 10 a.m. by authorities
    • Hruby drove to a rock-ledge looking over the Crowsnest Pass and watched the flames that “were like a magnet.”
  • 4. Affecting Lives Cont’d
    • Local businesses such as offices, gas stations and restaurants did not suffer as bad as the timber and tourist industry
    • Spray Lake Sawmills however had the inverse effect by using most of the burnt lumber that was created
  • 5. Ecological Effects
    • Ecological pros and cons are present anytime there is a fire
    • A burned area looks devoid of life and releases toxins into the air
    • However, it also creates diversity and allows for rich undergrowth that wasn’t there before
    • The fires were a battle for firefighters and residents alike, but as in nature everyone was able to start anew.
