  2. 2. <ul><li>On Aug. 2l, 2003 what had been a seasonal wildfire abruptly changed direction & transformed into a gigantic fire. </li></ul><ul><li>The fire burned over 20,000 hectares of forest and the wall of flames spanned 6km and reached 50m into the sky </li></ul><ul><li>This is the energy equivalent of an atomic explosion every 30 minutes </li></ul>Seasonal Fire Goes Wrong

Affecting Lives <ul><li>“ I didn’t know what to take.You start doing crazy things,” says Elaine Hruby a resident who had to be evacuated at 10 a.m. by authorities </li></ul><ul><li>Hruby drove to a rock-ledge looking over the Crowsnest Pass and watched the flames that “were like a magnet.” </li></ul>
  4. 4. Affecting Lives Cont’d <ul><li>Local businesses such as offices, gas stations and restaurants did not suffer as bad as the timber and tourist industry </li></ul><ul><li>Spray Lake Sawmills however had the inverse effect by using most of the burnt lumber that was created </li></ul>

Ecological Effects <ul><li>Ecological pros and cons are present anytime there is a fire </li></ul><ul><li>A burned area looks devoid of life and releases toxins into the air </li></ul><ul><li>However, it also creates diversity and allows for rich undergrowth that wasn’t there before </li></ul><ul><li>The fires were a battle for firefighters and residents alike, but as in nature everyone was able to start anew. </li></ul>
