MEND in 2011

Local teams helped children and adults to live fitter, healthier andhappier lives, delivering nearly 700 programmes. We also welcomedour 60,000th MEND participant.

We teamed up with Diabetes UK to run Healthy LifestyleRoadshows around the country. Graduates shared theirexperiences of how their lives had changed after MEND.

We hopped, skipped and jumped to a hopscotchworld record with Tower Hamlets kids, as part ofBupa’s worldwide corporate volunteering day.

We worked with Bupa and NHS Tower Hamlets to launchBuilding Powerful Communities, a community wideapproach to obesity in the borough.

With Sinitta, we launched the second National Childhood ObesityWeek alongside Change4Life’s Really Big Summer Adventure.

We partnered with the Rugby Premiership to get six oftheir clubs delivering MEND programmes locally,encouraging their communities to get active and healthy.

We teamed up with the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust tolaunch a new mentoring project in Tower Hamlets. FormerOlympic swimmer Adam Whitehead mentored children andfamilies, helping to build the Olympic legacy.

We established the MEND International Research Group (MIRG),an independent group of leading academics, to guide MEND’sresearch strategy.

Our experts got busy developing new programmes and servicesand tailoring them to meet local needs: Momenta for adults,an under 5s service for NHS Ealing, MEND SEN and MEND Teens.

We wrapped up the £8 million Big Lottery Fund Wellbeing portfolio,after hitting our targets and achieving a status of ‘outstanding’.

We were chosen to deliver large-scale contracts for child weightmanagement services in The Wirral and Buckinghamshire.

Our research team continued to build our evidence base,and we published our 29th MEND publication.

We were awarded a major CDC funded child obesityprevention grant in the USA to evaluate MEND’sfamily programmes using an RCT.

We presented data on over 15,000 children at the Obesity SocietyConference in Orlando and the World Diabetes Congress in Dubai.

We formed new corporate partnerships. We were chosen as one ofthree national partners for the Johnson & Johnson CorporateCitizenship Trust to support families in the most deprived areas ofthe UK. We are also working with Kellogg’s Swim Active to fundswimming facilities and train staff for local MEND programmes.

We showcased our fantastic partnerships and spread positivehealth messages at the Autumn party conferences.

We grew our international reach by setting up MEND Inc in the USA,which has partnered with AmeriGroup.

We adapted MEND 2-4 and MEND 7-13 in partnershipwith Alberta Health Services for families in Canada.

The MEND Foundation, a US charity, secured partnershipswith the Colorado Health Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shieldand Anthem Wellpoint among others.
