Who is Twitter? Twitter is a privately funded startup with ofﬁces in the SoMA neighborhood of San Francisco, CA. Started as a side project in March of 2006, Twitter has grown into a real-time short messaging service that works over multiple networks and devices. In countries all around the world, people follow the sources most relevant to them and access information via Twitter as it happens—from breaking world news to updates from friends. © Twitter

What is it for? Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. It is a way to update personal status and inform people of current and up-to-date information.

How is Twitter changing the way we contact or communicate with each other? Can be a mass location device - GPS. Similar to text messaging. Celebrity Voyeurism. Micro-blog - 140 characters or less (i.e. I’m eating pizza.) Shortening how we say things in normal conversation (i.e. @cara_marsh)

Twitter’s evolution Started simply as “what are you doing?” Has turned into instant updates about social conﬂict around the world (#iranelection), available jobs, tips and tools for careers, networking, events using hashtags for your area (#94102), taking over social networking - add to Facebook and Myspace. You can now update by text, IM, and by web. News site Switched.com mentions Twitter as a “legitimate source of news information.”
