There are 15000 species of fish, octopuses, crabs, coral and lots more.
Some coral that live in the GBR is…
And heaps more.
When they spawn the eggs attach to the ground and believe it or not their body is made out limestone.
A coral reef is when all the different types of coral group up.
Coral reefs are underwater structures made from calcium carbonate secreted by corals . Corals are colonies of tiny living animals found in marine waters containing few nutrients. Most coral reefs are built from stony corals , and are formed by polyps that live together in groups. The polyps secrete a hard carbonate exoskeleton which
provides support and protection for the body of each polyp. Reefs grow best in warm, shallow, clear, sunny and agitated waters.
The threats to the GBR is…
People over fish
Boat anchors pull out coral
Some ships spill oil which effects the creatures.
The crown-of-thorns starfish is a threat to the GBR because it eats all the coral and they are laying too many eggs.
But luckily something eats the crown-of-thorns starfish. It is the Trumpet fish!!!
This is a threat because all the bigger fish has to eat the smaller fish so the other fish will have nothing to eat.
Fishing is good to
the reef because if
there is a fish that is
covering the reef,
then there won’t be
too much of that fish.
Oil spills are bad to the GBR because it can kill all the animals. So there are not going to be that much fish if big ships come to the GBR and keep having oil spills.
