  • 2. Where is the Great Barrier Reef?<br />The Great Barrier Reef is off the coast of Queensland near Cairns.<br />Map<br />
  • 3. What types of sea creatures live there?<br />One type of sea creature that lives at the Great Barrier Reef is the turtle. It breeds in summer for 7-12 weeks at a time and disposes of it’s millions of eggs. Another type of sea creature is the Biscuit Sea Star.<br />Green turtle<br />Biscuit sea star<br />
  • 4. What is a coral reef?<br />A coral reef consists of millions of coral polyps of all different kinds, shapes and sizes.<br />Brain coral<br />Coral polyps<br />
  • 5. How is a coral reef made?<br />A coral reef is made when coral polyps die and leave their skeleton behind. <br />Reef with fish<br />reef<br />
  • 6. What are some things that people use coral reefs for?<br />Some things people use coral reefs for are swimming, sightseeing and crashing into with ships making an oil spill. <br />Oil spill<br />Swimming<br />
  • 7. Threats to the Great Barrier Reef<br />One threat is the Crown-Of-Thorns-Starfish which eats coral.<br />Another threat is the fishing industry and over fishing.<br />The last threat but one of the worst threats are anchors.<br />Over fishing<br />Anchor<br />Crown-of-thorns<br />

  • 11. What is being done to stop the threats?<br />Now you have to have a license to fish in a small boats and you are not allowed to boat in or near reefs.
