The Wakefield District’s key monthly business networking event welcomed guest speaker Deirdre Bounds founder of ethical travel company i-to-i.com who urged delegates to \’just be who you are\’ and to embrace change.

Deirdre Bounds is one of the UK\’s top female entrepreneurs. Proclaimed by the Telegraph as having “Northern grit and determination that represents the perfect role model for business”, the former standup-comedienne, world backpacker, English teacher, outback bus driver and mum of two Deirdre Bounds is the down to earth visionary who set up the responsible travel company i-to-i.com, which sold for £20M.

Deirdre\’s address focused on her unique branding experience and the story of her journey which proves success is within anyone\’s reach given the right amount of commitment and passion.

  • Vacancy gap is 5109
  • Prices rose by 1% in April to push the cost of the average home to £167,802. However, the Nationwide predicted that the past year's surge in prices would tail off later this year, with sellers starting to outnumber buyers.

At Sellafield nuclear plant Redhall won a bid to commission a new boiler park worth £3.2M.
  • HARIBO, the Pontefract-based business and the UK's leading gums and jellies brand, has jumped six places to number 72 in the Grocer's league table, Britain's 100 Biggest Brands The news comes as the brand celebrates year-on-year success reporting double digit growth in volume share to 26 per cent of the market.
  • The UK Employee Ownership Index (EOI) shows that employee-owned companies continue to outperform the FTSE All-Share. In the third quarter of 2009, employee-owned companies’ share prices were up 27.6%, performing better than the FTSE All Share Companies’ share prices which were up 21.3% over the quarter. 
  • The deal will also prove a bonus to the Yorkshire corporate finance market as a number of advisors on the deal are known to be based in this region, including KPMG , led by Christian Mayo , which acted for Card Factory.
  • Wakefield Council has rented 15,000 sq ft of space at £15 sq ft at the site and sub-let the offices to mail order company Redcats UK Social enterprise company ‘Bag It Don’t Bin It’ are providing the bags which will carry the logo ‘I Y SOUTH ELMSALL SHOPS AND MARKET.’
  • The £21M project aims to demonstrate the viability of a technology believed to be a major tool in reducing global carbon emissions. The announcement comes as Yorkshire and Humber was named by Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband as the first low carbon economic area for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).
  • Centre will include multi-skills workshops, beauty studio and teaching space
  • The event formed part of first’s joint approach with partners Wakefield Council, Jobcentre Plus, government and others to help ensure young unemployed people get a job and have a future in Wakefield
