1. 1. Biodiversity
Why should we care?
2. 2. 2010 The Year of Biodiversity
2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity. It is a celebration of life on earth and the value of Biodiversity in our lives. This year people throughout the world have been asked to take action to protect Biodiversity for future generations.
3. 3. What is Biodiversity?
Biodiversity is the variability of all living organisms .
Biodiversity makes up ecosystems and habitats that support living resources, including wildlife, fisheries and forests. It helps provide for our basic human needs such as food, shelter, and medicine
4. 4. Putting this simply
Biodiversity is life
Biodiversity is our life
5. 5. Why should we care about biodiversity?

Human activity is causing the diversity of life on earth to be lost at an accelerated rate (1000 times its usual rate!)
 6. 6. Biodiversity is essential to sustaining the living networks and systems that provide us with, health, wealth, food and fuel.
 7. 7. Without biodiversity life as we know it today would not exist.

Humans are part of natures Biodiversity, we have the power to protect or destroy it.
8. 8. Some Facts

Two out of every three bird species are in decline worldwide.
 9. 9. One in every 8 plant species is endangered or threatened
 10. 10. One quarter of mammals, one quarter of amphibians and one fifth of reptiles are now endangered or vulnerable.

This chart highlights the reduction in Marine, Freshwater and Terrestrial Species since 1970
Source: Global Biodiversity outlook (2006)Chapter 2 The 2010 Biodiversity Target: Establishing Current Trends pg 25
11. 11. Also
Forests and Fisheries which are home to many of these species are in crisis.
12. 12. This map shows the increase deforestation caused by human activity
Source: Global Biodiversity outlook (2006)Chapter 2 The 2010 Biodiversity Target: Establishing Current Trends pg. 32
13. 13. IMAGINE a world without
Trees
Oceans we can swim in
Butterflies
Frogs
Wolves
Fish
14. 14. Think about how our lives would be different If these were no longer here?. Imagine a world without enough oxygen and water? Or a world in which very few animals besides ourselves exist. Think about how this would impact our lives.
15. 15. What can we do?

Spend time outdoors
 16. 16. Plant trees
 17. 17. Support companies that work in ways to reduce environmental damage.
 18. 18. LEARN MORE about Biodiversity.

What else can YOU think of?
19. 19. Reflection
Lets reflect on what Biodiversity means to us and our community and how it influences the way we live. Why should we care about biodiversity?
