Evard, All Rights Reserved INVICTUS UNCONQUERED…UNDEFEATED  You’re each the master and captain of creating a life well-lived.  You can choose from millions of “maps” guiding you to your chosen destination. HOWEVER 3 What the maps, or books, or DVDs, or workshops can’t tell you is what the trip will be like, what you will experience along the way, and how to respond to the storms you always encounter on your journey.

Habit 2: Wanting to do things perfectly. Want perfection. Habit 3: Needing rewards that may conflict with change efforts. Need reward. Habit 4: Feeling overwhelmed. Overwhelmed. Habit 5: Becoming frustrated when faced with more work and greater complexity than expected. Too much work. 8
    9. 9. © 2010 Beth L. Evard, All Rights Reserved WHAT DO HABITS FEEL LIKE?  Practice  Routine  Pattern  Propensity  Disposition  Tendency  Dependency  Compulsion  Accustomed to  Used to  Proclivity  Inclination 9
    10. 10. © 2010 Beth L. Evard, All Rights Reserved HABITS ARE ADDICTIVE  Habit formation occurs in the basal ganglia – a cluster of nuclei between the analytical and emotional brains.  Habits are learned in chunks and over time become paired with dopamine-containing neurons.  Dopamine is released by rewarding experiences such as food, sex, and drugs…and habits.  Once habits form, dopamine is immediately triggered when the habit kicks-in.  Even if a habit is “broken” the learned pattern remains in the brain after the behavior is extinguished. This pattern can be re-triggered by old, durable clues.  Some habits are convenient, but all habits alter one’s brain structure, by-passing conscious control over what we are doing. 10

Evard, All Rights Reserved AND YOU THOUGHT YOUR ANALYTICAL BRIAN WAS IN CHARGE 11 New, analytical brain Old, back, emotional brain The New York Times, 1/2/07 “…the conscious mind is like a monkey riding a tiger of subconscious decisions and actions in progress, frantically making up stories about being in control.”
