The Logans own 400 acres of land which includes trees
and land for growing cotton. It was mostly virgin forest.
The Logan land had once been owned by Harlan Granger.
The Grangers sold it during Reconstruction to a Yankee
so they could get tax money.
Grandpa had bought 200 acres in 1887, and then
another 200 acres in 1918.
There was debt on half the land which Grandpa had
bought in 1918. There were also taxes on all 400 acres
of the land. Papa needed to go to work because there
hadn’t been enough money from the cotton to pay for
the taxes and the mortgage and live on.

• A group led by the Wallaces burned them.
• They burned the berry family because a white
man accused him of flirting with a white
women while at a gas station.
• Mr. Berry was burned so severely he couldn’t
talk.
• The Logan’s had to go visit the Berry’s after
they were burned as a punishment for going
to the Wallace store.

The Jefferson School bus
keeps driving by the Logan
children on their way to
school and making them
all muddy and ruining their
clothes. The children on
the bus call them bad
names just because of
their race. The Logan
children are very upset
about this. They are also
upset because they do not
get to ride on a bus on
their way to school, just
because they are African-
Americans.

Papa came home so that he could visit his family
and bring them Mr. Morrison
He was very happy to visit his family
Papa came on Saturday but had to leave Sunday
night so that he could get a night train out of
Vicksburg to get back to work on Monday
He could only stay for a little while because he
didn’t want to lose his job
Papa told his family about Mr. Morrison and why
he brought him

23. Mr. Morrison (Page 37)
• Papa said Mr. Morrison was coming to do jobs
and work on tasks, but he was really coming to
protect the family when Papa was away
• He was also very tall and muscular
• Mr. Morrison got fired from his job when he got
in a fight with some white men and beat them
up badly
• He had no real family, and wanted to work for
the Logans and get a place to stay instead of

• John Henry Berry died because he had
gotten burned very badly by the night men
• The deacons of the congregation prayed for
his soul, but later, angry and hopeless
words were spoken
• He was lit on fire by the night men and had
gotten burned very severely
• One of the Berries had been accused of
flirting with a white woman and so they
had all been burned
29. REVENGE ON THE BUS
During lunch hour, the Logan children went outside to the
place where they were getting splashed by the bus.
They dug a trench so that the bus would get caught in it for
revenge against calling the Logan children bad names.
To cover up the trench a little bit, they put water in it. After
school, they came back to watch the bus get stuck.
When the bus came by in the pouring rain, it got stuck in the
trench, and the white children had to walk home. The bus
driver said that the children would have to walk to and from
school for two weeks.
The Logan children were very happy they got revenge on the
children for calling them mean names.
31. Brother Avery Visits(pg.
60)
• One night Brother Avery came to the
Logan’s house to inform them that the
Night Men were riding again. The Night
Men are a group of white people who
try to attack black people. Cassie was
afraid they were coming after them
because of the bus incident.

33. The Night Men!
One night Mr. Avery comes over to warn Mama, Big Ma,
and Mr. Morrison that the “riders” are riding that night,
and he doesn’t know why, but the kids think it’s
because of what they did to the bus. Cassie sees Big
Ma come into her room in the night and pull a rifle out
from under Cassie’s bed. When Big Ma leaves the
room, Cassie goes on the porch to talk to Stacey, and
that is when she sees cars pull into her driveway.
Somebody got out of the first car, but then shook his
head and all the cars turned around and left. After that
she sees Mr. Morrison moving along the side of the
house with a shotgun in his hand.

36. Mr. Morrison Protects the
Logans
Even though Mr. Morrison is hired
by Papa, he still acts like a member
of the family! He help protect them
when the riders come through their
town. He is on the outside of the
house with a shotgun at hand! He
helps Mama, Papa and Big Ma
protect Cassie and her brothers
while they are sleeping!
