• 1. The Rise of Poughkeepsie??By: Matthew DeMayo
• 2. Recent additions to the city of Poughkeepsie have people believing that Poughkeepsie is a city on the rise. The newly developed “Walkway Over the Hudson,” has people coming to Poughkeepsie, but are these people spending money here and helping to improve the economy?
• 3. Many buildings and real estate developments continue to crumble. It has been said that a chain is only has good as it’s weakest link, so while some parts of Poughkeepsie begin to rise, others continue to sink.
• 4. There are several different factors that are turning people away from Poughkeepsie. Families fear unsafe neighborhoods, weak school systems and poor real estate. The Dutchess County Jail sits in the middle of Poughkeepsie and people do not want to live in the same neighborhood as a jail.
• 5. Many roads look run down and there are many abandon lots and buildings that are just littered with trash. These lots are unsafe for children to play because of things that children can severally harm themselves on. We need safer places for our children to play and grow up.
• 6. The school systems of Poughkeepsie are not the strongest in the state of New York. Children are the future of this city, state, country and world. Our school systems must improve in order to better our children which will eventually better Poughkeepsie.
• 7. Newer buildings have been built on Main St., in an attempt to give the city of Poughkeepsie a face lift and perhaps attract more people to visit the city and spend money here. Will these new businesses be able to last, or will there new buildings eventually turn into another “for rent” building that seem to be everywhere in Poughkeepsie?
• 8. New buildings have been developed in order to give the city Poughkeepsie a more attractive look, but the new buildings can not make up for the amount of abandon buildings that seem to be everywhere in Poughkeepsie. Theses buildings must be made into successful businesses like the new buildings in order to give Poughkeepsie the face lift that everyone desires.
• 9. In the end, it is up to the people of the city of Poughkeepsie to improve their home. The best way to do that is to take action, go vote and elect people that will work to improve Poughkeepsie. They must improve the city in everyway: economy, school systems, real estate, etc.
• 10. One of the main positives of Poughkeepsie is Marist College. Marist continues to grow and become one of the most esteemed colleges in the country. With every year that goes by Marist becomes better and better. Marist helps to attract more people to Poughkeepsie and put more money into the cities’ businesses. As Marist continues to improve so does the city.
