  2. 2. The Personal Essay<br />Your first composition will be a personal essay about one of your most-valued beliefs.<br />For examples of what you’ll write, visit www.thisibelieve.org<br />First, you must know the difference between a personal essay, personal narrative, and personal memoir.<br />
  3. 3. Three Personality Types<br />Personal Essay – Focused on a belief or insight about life that is significant to the writer.<br />Personal Narrative – Focused on a significant event.<br />Personal Memoir – Focused on a significant relationship between the writer and a person, place, or object. <br />
  4. 4. The Personal Essay<br />While the personal essay focuses on a belief or insight about life, it’s important to understand that to reveal that insight you must include aspects from both the narrative essay and the memoir.<br />Insights and beliefs are usually based upon experiences and relationships that have taught the writer what individual values are most important.<br />

Topic #1 – Broken Promises<br />Most of us have been in a situation where we made a promise that for one reason or another we were unable to keep. <br />When were you disappointed because someone made you a promise that theyfailed to keep? Or when did you break apromise that you made to someone else?<br />
  8. 8. Topics #2 – Work in Progress<br />All of us are works in progress with a long way to go before we reach our full potential.<br />In what skill or area are you still working to make progress?<br />
  9. 9. Topic #3 – My Hero<br />Our society uses the word hero in many different ways?<br />How do you define hero, and who is a hero in your life?<br />
  10. 10. Topic #4 – Judging a Book By Its Cover<br />We all tend to judge people by their appearances, even though looks can be deceiving.<br />Have you ever prejudged someone incorrectly based on their appearance or has someone ever prejudged you unfairly based on how you look?<br />
  11. 11. Topic #5 – My Hurdles<br />Everyone has problems or challenges to overcome.<br />What obstacles are you proud to have faced and conquered?<br />
  12. 12. Topic #6 – “I’m sorry”<br />There is a famous adage: "To err is human, to forgive divine.”<br />When did you feel divine because you were able to forgive someone for their mistake?When did someone act divine by forgiving you when you were wrong?<br />
