IP storage delivers the ability to connect servers and storage using traditional IP networking. It provides a cost-effective connectivity option to enable affordable storage consolidation for some applications.
IP storage has evolved over the last few years, and EMC has played a key part in helping its customers implement and deploy IP storage. EMC has established itself as an industry leader for the provision of IP-based storage solutions, which include best-of-breed platforms, powerful storage software, and a complete range of Services and expertise to help customers deploy IP storage.
Traditionally, users had choices to make when purchasing networked storage. SAN was optimal for high-performance and transactional applications that were block-oriented. NAS was best for collaborative applications, leveraging the existing IP networking technology.
However, block-oriented applications with moderate performance typically missed out on the benefits of storage consolidation. Some customers implemented block-oriented applications (e.g., databases) on NAS solely to get the benefits of storage consolidation.
iSCSI extends today’s traditional networked storage deployment models. Because it uses standard IP networking as the interconnect between servers and storage, iSCSI offers much of the traditional value of SAN consolidation, but at the traditionally lower cost of NAS consolidation. Bandwidth can be shared via virtual LANs (VLANs).
iSCSI ushers in a new set of dynamics that puts the benefits of consolidated storage well within reach of many current DAS deployments. If you’re looking to constrain your costs and your applications don’t have stringent performance requirements, iSCSI may be the ideal choice for you.
EMC offers a full line of iSCSI platforms to fit a wide range of needs in this type of environment—from the entry level to the enterprise.

The Internet SCSI (iSCSI) protocol is a means of transporting SCSI packets over TCP/IP. iSCSI works by encapsulating SCSI commands into TCP and transporting them over an IP network. As iSCSI traffic is IP-based, it can be routed or switched on standard Ethernet equipment.
The three basic components of the iSCSI environment are:
Initiator
Target
Logical Unit Numbers (LUNs)
iSCSI is a client-server architecture. Clients of a iSCSI interface, typically hosts running a general-purpose operating system (Windows, Linux, UNIX), are called "initiators." iSCSI initiators can use traditional Ethernet adaptor network-interface cards (NICS) on the host (which is sometimes called a “software initiator”). Through the use of iSCSI drivers on the host, a NIC can transmit packets of block-level data over an IP network. When using a NIC, the server handles the packet creation of block-level data and performs all TCP/IP processing.
The TCP/IP processing-performance bottleneck has been the driving force behind the development of TCP/IP offload engines (TOE) on adapter cards (sometimes called “hardware initiators”). A TOE removes the TCP/IP processing from the host CPU. Thus, a TCP/IP offload storage NIC operates more like a storage HBA rather than like a standard NIC.
Initiators issue SCSI "commands" to request services from a server known as a “target”—the other endpoint. A target can contain multiple Logical Units (LUs). Each LU has an address within a target called a Logical Unit Number, or LUN. There are multiple types of iSCSI targets:
iSCSI target gateways (sometimes called “iSCSI bridges”) convert the protocol from iSCSI to Fibre Channel.
iSCSI target on NAS (sometimes called “emulated iSCSI”) supports both file protocols (NFS, CFS) as well as iSCSI. Typically, in iSCSI, LUNs are implemented as files on the NAS device.
iSCSI target arrays (sometimes called “native iSCSI”) are storage devices that can be accessed directly using the iSCSI protocol.
Many of you have already implemented Network Attached and Storage Area Network products because of the consolidation benefits they offered for .
This first occurred with the file sharing and Networked file benefits that Celerra offers. This, as was just alluded to, was done to aggregate your storage to a single highly available platform that also provides functionality for remote replication and aids in the areas of management for backups and other administrative processes.
Some of you may be SAN customers that are here to understand the benefits of NAS and how they might be beneficial in your environment to meet a particular need within your organization. If that is the case then your environment may look like the diagram on the screen with many file servers, all attached to local or Just a Bunch of Disk (JBOD) devices.
In this case there are very real benefits that can be achieved by moving to NAS for file sharing. I have already touched upon a few, but they can really be summed up as flexibility and manageability. The Celerra supports many of the tools that make you and your organizations successful today and enhances them with a full suite of software functionality to create an end-to-end solution to support your corporate polocies.
That’s just for file sharing!

DART conforms to the Microsoft Standard for Snapshot (called VSS Provider) functionality, so Celerra SnapSure for iSCSI LUNs can be managed by standard Microsoft applications such as Exchange 2003. This provides a consistent copy of Windows application data with application running and files open, using the standard Microsoft interface and administrative tools.
For example, with Exchange 2003, the VSS Writer would be the Exchange server, and the VSS Requestor would be the Exchange 2003 Manager application that defines and coordinates the snaps (“shadow copies”). This allows a standard API for Exchange Manager to access the SnapSure for iSCSI functionality. The NS Series system becomes the VSS Provider.
Celerra SnapSure for iSCSI LUNs and Celerra Replicator for iSCSI are both managed by EMC Replication Manager/SE.
When thinking about application solutions, Exchange 2003 in this example, there are four basic categories of solutions and opportunities.
The first area to consider for your Exchange solution is consolidation. As indicated on this slide, consolidation is the centralization of information storage and management.
The second area of consideration is backup. It is critical that companies have high-speed database backup and recovery available in order to adequately support their e-mail environments.
Archive is the third category. Archive is important to many customers in that it is key to freeing up primary storage through moving less-frequently-used information to more economical devices.
Finally, protection of your e-mail environment from disasters will provide business protection via remote disaster recovery.
We will examine what EMC can do for your Exchange environment across these four categories in more detail throughout this presentation.

The environment depicted on this slide is typical for Exchange: There are numerous Exchange servers. You will note the each server has its own internal storage that is being used to storage e-mail messages and attachments.
This environment is difficult to manage, and resources are not easily shared. For example, imagine that you are running out of storage space on one server. You cannot make use of extra storage capacity on any other servers. As a result, you urgently need to add storage to a particular server—often causing downtime for your e-mail users.
Of course, there are similar problems in trying to balance performance between the servers. Although this scenario is typical of many Exchange environments, it is limited in its ability to grow, difficult to scale, and expensive to manage.

With the introduction of the Celerra, the complexity of the environment is greatly reduced. Here, the locally-attached disks from all the Exchange servers are consolidated within the Celerra. This consolidated environment scales easily as your Exchange environment grows.
Note that all storage capacity is now available to all servers, so adding storage capacity is more economical. Assigning new capacity to a server no longer disruptive, is managed centrally, and is better protected. The Celerra NS Series storage system is connected to the server network and uses iSCSI protocol, meaning that the Exchange servers see the Celerra as local disk. Microsoft supports the use of iSCSI for Exchange 2003.

Clustering is an excellent way to increase your service levels and availability for e-mail, which continues to grow in importance to the business.

Note that we have added MSCS clusters into the consolidated Celerra environment that we saw earlier. Additionally, EMC uses Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) to create checkpoints without disrupting access to Exchange. Imagine being able to get a disk image of your Exchange environment in just seconds without even stopping Exchange. Checkpoints can be used as the source data for your tape-backup operations, so you no longer have to wait for tape backup to complete.
In addition to using checkpoints to support traditional backup applications, EMC recommends that you take checkpoints of all your data periodically. This is a great way to restore files without having to go to tape. Many existing EMC customers are doing this three times a day—at 10:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m., for example.
Local disk-based backups can also be used directly to speed restores for corrupt or damaged Exchange databases. Backup can be performed directly using the NetWorker Module for Exchange Server, which performs a VSS backup, using either tape or ATA disk drives as the target location.

EMC Solutions for Exchange 2003 allow you to automatically manage stored e-mails, thus increasing the productivity of your end users by saving them from having to spend time managing their .pst files locally. This also reduces the risk of data loss and speeds eDiscovery. The Centera satisfies governance requirements for content authenticity.
Here we have the Celerra consolidated storage environment, with the addition of EmailXtender software as well as the Centera Content Addressed Storage (CAS) system. EmailXtender will follow policies that you create to automatically archive e-mail messages and attachments off the primary storage onto long-term storage in the Centera. This means that Exchange storage becomes more economical as you archive off primary storage, yet the e-mails are still seamlessly accessible to your users. Policies can be created to ensure that corporate-governance and compliance mandates are being met.
DiskXtender can be added to the EmailXtender server, or installed on a separate server. It provides the capability to move archive databases to ATA disk drives or to the Centera 4-Node platform. DiskXtender has a set of user-defined policies that facilitate the automated movement of files from one class of storage to another.

This is an example of what happens when an e-mail message is “shortcutted.” EmailXtender creates a shortcut to the attachment on the primary storage system and moves the attachment to the archive, an EMC Centera storage system. This is entirely automatic and seamless to the e-mail users, yet this can lead to great cost saving for your organization.
By shortcutting attachments, you can reduce your messaging-server storage needs by 60–80%.
