  2. 2. COURSE HIGHLIGHTSThis symposium includes interactive workshops, small group discussions, and lecturesin anesthesia and perioperative management. The emphasis is on current informationuseful for those with an interest in clinical anesthesiology and perioperative medicine. Theinteractive workshops focus on Difficult Airways and Regional Anesthesia, and “hands-on” use of the latest technology and equipment in perioperative management.A unique Anesthesia Simulation Workshop is offered at the Mayo Clinic Hospital inPhoenix. An additional registration fee required to attend the workshop. Transportationprovided.COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVESUpon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to: • Identify key components of the Affordable Care Act. • Define aspects of optimal mechanical ventilation management. • Identify important aspects of fast track cardiac anesthesia. • Review use of perioperative low dose ketamine. • iscuss a physiologic approach to management of the patient with pulmonary D hypertension. • Identify neurodevelopmental effects of early anesthetic exposure. • xamine pitfalls associated with perioperative management of bariatric surgery E patients. • Determine risk factors for perioperative nerve injuries. • Identify the pathophysiology and treatment of anesthesia-associated cardiac arrest. • Review perioperative pain management in the chronic pain patient. • Evaluate the anesthetic implications of head and neck trauma. • Discuss drug diversion in the health care work place. • Evaluate fatigue and the anesthesia provider. • Examine how echocardiography helps in management of the acutely unstable patient. • Review components of central line insertion safety. • Evaluate common checklists used during anesthetic care. • Identify practice that will minimize residual neuromuscular paralysis. • Discuss recommendations regarding pediatric outpatient anesthesia. • Review brain protection during the perioperative period. • Discuss the use of tranexamic acid in orthopedic surgery. • Discuss the primary determinants of maternal mortality in obstetric patients. • Identify co-morbid conditions that influence the risk of outpatient surgery. • Discuss anesthetic implications of new anticoagulants.Attendance at this course does not indicate nor guarantee competence or proficiency in theperformance of any procedures which may be discussed or taught in this course.INTENDED AUDIENCEThis course is intended for practicing anesthesiologists, anesthesiology technicians, nurseanesthetists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, anesthesiologist assistants andperioperative health care providers.CREDITCollege of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, is accredited by the Accreditation Council forContinuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, designates this live educational activity for a maximumof 23.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
