Reserved Workshops, however, require advance reservations because of their special educational requirements (for example, close faculty–learner interaction or limited equipment for hands-on learning.) McNeill, MD, FACP Professor of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC The management of patients with diabetes can be compli- cated and varies by age and gender. This Pre-Course will discuss the practical management of diabetes as patients transition through the life cycle. Diabetes management issues related to care for the young adult, pregnant woman, middle- aged patient with comorbid medical problems, and older adults will be discussed. Finally, as the growing population of diabetic patients enters our health care system, the role of care teams in the management of these patients and the evidence behind the success of such management will be discussed. Expert clinician-educators will focus on the cardiovascular disease issues with which internists are most frequently faced and will provide key points to update the audience and foster patient care. Subjects covered will include identification and management of acute and chronic coronary artery disease, optimal treatment of congestive heart failure, risk assessment and risk reduction for the patient with cardiac disease who undergoes noncardiac surgery, approach to the patient with valvular heart disease, use of the novel antithrom- botic and anticoagulant agents for the patient with cardiovascular disease, basic venous disease for the internist, and a discussion of the approach to the patient with new-onset chest pain. Hospital Medicine: From Admission to Discharge PRE 1404 Wednesday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Jamie Newman, MD, FACP Associate Professor, Hospital Internal Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN Hospital medicine is a specialty dedicated to the expert management of acutely ill hospital inpatients. Hospitalists are educators, clinicians, researchers, and leaders with a focus on quality, safety, resource utilization, and transitions of care. The approach of this Pre-Course will be to address issues in clinical inpatient care, with a hospitalist perspective on management and process improvement. The individual lectures will be framed by the hospitalization of one patient who will be followed from admission to discharge with a case- based format and will utilize an audience-response system. The faculty, composed of experienced hospitalists from across the United States, will discuss ideal medical management and explore how to minimize the risk for many nosocomial complications. Samuels, MD, DSc (Hon), FAAN, MACP, FANA Miriam Sydney Joseph Professor of Neurology, Harvard Medical School; Chairman, Department of Neurology, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA Neurologic complaints comprise an important part of the practice of internal medicine, but over the years the exposure to formal neurologic training as part of internal medicine training has waned. This Pre-Course is designed to help internists approach the common neurologic problems seen in their patients and to update them in this rapidly changing field of medicine. A broad view of the spectrum of neurologic disorders seen in the practice of internal medicine will be discussed, including the neurologic history and examination, headache, dizziness, altered mental status, and peripheral neurology. Learning Objectives: 1. Take a neurologic history and perform a competent neurologic examination. 2. Recognize the major types of headache and initiate treatment for each of them. 3. Understand the spectrum of dizziness and be able to make the likely diagnosis. 4. Recognize and treat the major movement disorders. 5. Oxentenko, MD, FACG, FACP Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN Gastrointestinal complaints are common, and patients will typically present to their internists as the first point of care for such issues. Many conditions within gastroenterology are diagnosed based on symptom-based criteria, and understanding a cost-effective approach to the evaluation and man- agement of such patients is essential, as is recognizing which patients require additional testing. This Pre-Course is designed to assist internists in the practical approach in the evaluation and management of frequently encountered conditions within gastroenterology and hepatology. Topics to be discussed include the appropriate surveillance practice patterns for those with Barrett’s esophagus or colorectal neoplasia, the evaluation and management of patients with suspected celiac disease or irritable bowel syndrome, clinical pearls in the health maintenance of patients with chronic gastrointestinal and liver conditions, and addressing frequently asked questions regarding ordering gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures. Learning Objectives: 1. Recommend appropriate endoscopic surveillance patterns for patients with common gastrointestinal conditions. 2. Recognize the protean manifestations of celiac disease, and understand the appropriate work-up to diagnose the condition. 3.   • 12. 12 ICD-10 Boot Camp PRE 1407 Wednesday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Scott Manaker, MD, PhD, FACP Associate Professor of Medicine, Vice Chair for Regulatory Affairs, Department of Medicine, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA This Pre-Course will provide an overview of the 10th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10) and how it compares to ICD-9. Expert faculty will discuss the nuts and bolts of using the new coding system, what your practice needs to do to implement the new system, how to document care to support the new coding system, and the different implications for professional fee billing (from your practice) and facility billing (from your hospital). It will also cover how ICD-10 will affect the metrics, such as patient severity of illness, risk adjustments, quality, and safety, now being applied by Medicare and other payers to rate you and your practice. Topics will include: 5 How to use the ICD-10 coding system – the structure and heightened specificity required for clinical documentation in the new coding system. 5 How to use general equivalency mappings (GEMs) and backward and forward cross-walks to translate between ICD-9 and ICD-10. 5 Implementation implications, including dealing with vendors, payers, billing systems, staff training, and quality reporting. 5 Examination of how ICD-10 will affect the ratings of you and your practice. The Pre-Course will include both didactic components and interactive case studies focusing on notes from patient charts. ABIM Maintenance of Certification Learning Sessions These live, self-study sessions are designed to help internists complete the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge modules through group discussion led by expert faculty. An audience-response system is used to enhance the learning experience and encourage participation. On each day, Tuesday and Wednesday, there will be two separate sessions (one in the morning and another in the afternoon). These sessions will cover the 2012 and 2013 Update modules in Internal and Hospital Medicine. Each of the four Update modules qualifies for 10 Maintenance of Certification points in the Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge category. You must register separately for each session that you wish to attend. Each session is designated for 3.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Learning Objectives: 1. Participate in group discussion to determine answers to multiple-choice questions. 2. Complete the module(s) toward fulfillment of the ABIM’s Maintenance of Certification requirements. Guest Activities Program ACP welcomes all guests of Internal Medicine 2014 attendees to Orlando. There are two categories of registration for guests—Guest Program Registrant or Exhibit Hall Attendee.
