Project Scope <ul><li>Library of Congress, Library Services, Geography & Map Division awarded $240,240 grant from Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) </li></ul><ul><li>Catalog approximately 1,800 African multi-sheet map sets and inventory 125,000 map sheets. Provide access through a web portal using Google Earth. </li></ul><ul><li>The collection includes 19 th century to present large scale mapping of Africa by various colonial powers. The largest volume and most expansive collection of African set maps. </li></ul><ul><li>Project team of professionals in various disciplines: Cataloging, Collections Management, Digital, Reference, Information Technology & Policy, Library Technicians, Interns, and an Arabic Language Expert. </li></ul><ul><li>Project span: 2009 – 2011 </li></ul>

African Set Map Project <ul><li>What is a map set? </li></ul><ul><li>A set map consists of at least 2 or more individual sheets within a map series. </li></ul><ul><li>Usually the individual sheets contain the same data elements such as, scale, sheet name/series, and imprint, issuing body or corporate body. </li></ul><ul><li>At the same time the individual sheets contain different data elements such as, sheet title, coordinates, edition statement, and sheet numbering. </li></ul>

  7. 14. Establishing a Reference Point <ul><li>Grid data is relative to a point of origin; therefore, a known point can be used to determine the map grid’s point of origin. </li></ul><ul><li>Select an intersection on map sheet and match location on Google Earth. </li></ul>
  8. 15. Determining X of Point of Origin <ul><li>In this case, X of the known point is 21,500 meters east from the point of origin. </li></ul><ul><li>Therefore, measure 21,500 meters west. </li></ul>
  9. 16. Determining Y of Point of Origin <ul><li>Y is 55,500 meters north of the point of origin. </li></ul><ul><li>Therefore, measure 55,500 meters south. </li></ul>

Central Meridian and Longitude of Origin Established <ul><li>11˚ 36’ 30” N </li></ul><ul><li>42 ˚ 56’ 28” E </li></ul><ul><li>Data is entered into Geotrans as point of origin. </li></ul><ul><li>Sheet corner X,Y data is converted against this point to establish longitude and latitude </li></ul>
