    1. Welcome to our Advanced Content (AC) meeting!
    2. Advanced Content
      • Gifted and other high achieving students
      • Initial placement based on ITBS scores
      • Later consideration (when there’s room) for students with solid A’s and “exceeds standards” on CRCT
      • AC classes are optional (watch stress level)
      • Must keep a “B” average in AC classes
      • (please refer to “ Continuation Criteria”)
      • MATH is NOT an AC class
      • Odyssey of the Mind
      • Sci Olympiad
      • (need coaches!)
      • 1 st meeting after Labor Day
      • Academic Bowl
      • Sci/Math quizbowl
      • Robotics
      • F-1
    3. Student Forum
      • Students will be nominated after the 1 st quarter.
      • Vote in homeroom for team rep.
      • (two rep and one alternate per team)
      • Requirements
        • All A’s and B’s
        • All S’s
        • NO behavior referrals
      • Be sure to sign up and use I-parent and www.teacherweb.com/ga/eastcobb/ac
      • (not just for students)
      • E-mail is the best way to contact teachers
      • It is the STUDENT’S responsibility to make up work when absent
      • EXPECT AC classes to be more challenging---prepares students for high school honors/magnet classes

    7. Criteria for magnet admission:
      • Proper math placement entering the program
      • Middle school grades
      • Standardized test scores (8 th grade ITBS)
      • Admissions test scores (PSAT test Jan 24)
      • Strong interest and aptitude in math and/or science
      • Strong communication skills
      • Recommendations from middle school math & science teachers and a third educator of the student’s choice
    8. Wheeler’s magnet program
      • November 6, 2008, 7:00 - 9:00pm Information Meeting/Open House begins in the gymnasium
      • December 5, 2008- Application Deadline (Applications must be postmarked by this date)
      • February 24, 2009 - Admissions Notification Letters mailed to Students
    9. How can parents help?
      • Support the teachers!
      • Encourage, advise, and help your child, but do not do the work for them
      • Check our website AND I-parent at least once a week

      • Most kids have not brought in their 1-inch folder (for CRCT review materials)—will be using next week

    17. Homework
      • Should take 15-30 minutes per night for science ON AVERAGE (studying is part of nightly homework)
      • Homework folder
      • Assignment sheet given out each Monday

      • Late work is usually not accepted!

      • Sign-up and check I-parent at least once a week!
      • DON’T LET YOUR CHILD PROCRASTINATE , AND HELP THEM WITH ORGANIZATION
      • …but don’t do the work for them
      • Help them to write the work in their own words.
    18. Demerits —restart every quarter
      • 1 st =warning (still has an “S” in conduct)
      • 2 nd = contact parent (probably e-mail) and silent lunch
      • 3 rd = behavior notice sent home and phone call home (“N” in conduct)
      • 4 th =detention and parent conference
      • 5 th plus =office referral (“U” in conduct)
    19. Picture Project
      • Due after spring break
      • 25 pictures total
      • Starts today
      • Same “object” must be in each photo
      • Could video tape instead
      • Final project: scrapbook, PowerPoint, Photoshop, MovieMaker
