  2. 2. Millennium Development Goals<br />United Nations Millennium Declaration<br />In September 2000, <br />147 heads of State and Governments, <br />and 189 nations in total, <br />committed themselves to making the right to development a reality for everyone.<br />
  3. 3. Millennium Development Goals<br />Every country has committed itself until 2015:<br /><ul><li> to reduce poverty,
  4. 4. to provide education to all,
  5. 5. to improve health and
  6. 6. to preserve the environment.</li></li></ul><li>Millennium Development Goals<br />By signing the <br />UN Millennium Declaration<br />Macedonia,has committed its leadership <br />to achieve national MDGs by 2015<br />A national MDG process has already started<br />
  7. 7. Millennium Development Goals<br /><ul><li>Goal 1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  8. 8. Target: Halve, between 1990 and 2015:
  9. 9. the proportion of people whose income is less than one dollar a day
  10. 10. the proportion of people who suffer from hunger </li></ul>Today 24.000 people will die of hunger and hunger-related causes.<br />
  11. 11. Goal 1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger<br />One third of the population in Macedonia is living below the poverty line… <br />Poverty and inequality are increasing<br />

  13. 13. Target: Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling</li></ul>More than 860 million people in the world today are illiterate. 98% of them live in developing countries.<br />

  16. 16. Target: Eliminate gender disparity in all levels by 2015</li></ul>One of three women has been beaten, forced to have sex or abused in another way!<br />70% of the people living below the poverty line are female…<br />
  17. 17. Goal 3. Promote gender equality and empower women<br />The participation of women in the labour force decreased in the period of transition…<br />In 2000 the employment rate for men was two times higher than that for women! <br />

  19. 19. Target: Reduce by two thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate</li></ul>Every 1.2 second a child is born into poverty!<br />Every 3 second a child dies of disease!<br />Every 7 second a child dies of hunger or causes related to malnutrition!<br />
  20. 20. Goal 4. Reduce child mortality<br />In Macedonia the infant mortality rate has been reduced significantly over the past decade…. <br />….still child mortality in rural areas remains a challenge<br />

  22. 22. Target: Reduce by three quarters, between 1990 and 2015, the maternal mortality ratio</li></ul>Every minute a woman dies from childbirth complications!<br />1400 a day<br />500.000 a year<br />
  23. 23. Goal 5. Improve maternal health<br />Equal access and a good healthcare system remain the way forward in improving maternal health. <br />

  25. 25. Target: Have halted by 2015 and begun:
  26. 26. to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS
  27. 27. to reverse the incidence of malaria and other major diseases</li></ul>Around the world every day 13.000 more people become infected!<br />
  28. 28. Goal 6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases<br />Just because you cannot see it… <br />It does not mean that it is not there!<br />

  30. 30. Target:
  31. 31. Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programmes; reverse the loss of environmental resources.
  32. 32. Reduce by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation.</li></ul>One in six people have no access to safe water!<br />
  33. 33. Goal 7. Ensure environmental sustainability<br />Safe drinking water is not available to all, especially to people living in rural areas<br />
