  • 3. Cell Phone Damage Statistics
    • Research showed that the most common ways people damage their cell phones are either from the cell phone getting accidentally run over by a car, dropped, sat on, or from water damage. An overwhelming amount of people have lost their phones due to water damage.
  • 4. The Dot
    • Cell phone companies have added a new “red dot technology” to the back of their cell phones. The dot is located behind the battery, and is normally a white colour until it gets touched by water - then the dot turns a telltale red colour. By doing this, it is very clear that the cell phone has been water damaged and can no longer be covered under a warranty.
After Water Damage Before Water Damage
  • 5. Cell Phone Warranties
    • Basically, if the cell phone breaks within the allotted time of the warranty (typically one year) due to absolutely no fault of your own then it can be replaced or repaired. However, if the cell phone company can tell that the damage was caused by carelessness on your part (such as as water damage) then the warranty will not cover anything.
  • 6. How often can the cell phone be salvaged?
    • Surprisingly, a water-damaged cell phone usually has a good chance of being fixed if the user acts right away and does all the right things.
  • 7. Save a Water-Damaged Phone
    • Take out the battery of the water-damaged cell phone, and place both parts in a bowl of rice. Cover the bowl. Rice is a natural absorbent and will soak up the water from the cell phone. It may take a few days for it to completely dry. This has been proven to be the most effective method in saving a water-damaged cell phone.
  • 8. Do NOT do this!
    • Make sure you do not attempt to turn the cell phone off after it has been dunked by water! In most cases, the cell phone will fry itself when one attempts to turn it on after it is wet and be irreparably damaged. Wait until it’s dry (usually takes a few days) and then attempt to turn it on.
  • 9. Prevent Water-Damage
    • While there is no way to 100% waterproof a cell phone, a plastic case will certainly delay water from spreading into the phone. Hopefully, that’s enough time for a phone to quickly be rescued from the water before the insides get wet. Plastic cases are usually the best option.
