    Tegrity Basics - Presentation Transcript

    1. Tegrity Basics Introduction These instructions present the basics you need for using Tegrity, a program that simultaneously records your voice and the text/images you are showing on your computer screen, thus simulating a classroom lecture. These instructions may help you not only as you teach online but also as you go through the Online Instructor Certification program and need a way to demonstrate your skills. These instructions are for PC’s; if you use a Mac, please contact FCTL, x3826. Preliminary Tip 1: Access the internet through the browser Internet Explorer: Mozilla Firefox may fail to install Tegrity (or do so only after multiple attempts). Preliminary Tip 2: Disable “rotating screensavers,” and don’t use a wallpaper/ screensaver with a slideshow or photos. These can cause problems with Tegrity. Frustration Tip: If you have any problems with these instructions, call TAC, 4822, and ask for an ITAP student to come to your office and walk you through the basics of Tegrity. Adding Tegrity to a Course To add Tegrity to one of your FerrisConnect courses, or to your Let’s Get It Together course shell, click on the “Build” tab and then on “Course Content,” which is your course’s home page. Then click on "Add Content Link." From the drop-down menu that appears, click on “Tegrity.” Next you will be asked to name Tegrity—the obvious name is “Tegrity,” but you may want to call it “Class Recordings” or something like that. Next, click on the “Teach” tab. (You must be in “Teach” when you want to actually use the program.) Now click on the Tegrity icon, which should have appeared your home page. You will be prompted to install Tegrity on the computer. During the installation process, expect a couple of warning messages: DO allow scripts and Active-x controls to run.
    2. Preparing to Record a Presentation After installation is complete, Tegrity’s main window will open. Select the large "Record a Class" button located in the upper-left corner of the window. Then the "Tegrity Recorder" window will open. You may want to replace the bulldog with a picture of yourself. To do so, click on “Select Picture.” You will then be able to browse your computer for a picture of yourself. Click on the picture (or a link to it), and it will appear where the bulldog is. Test your computer’s microphone by talking into it. (Some faculty like to use head-set microphones.) If the colors rise to “Recommended “in the “Audio Level” column, your microphone is probably ok, but to hear how you sound, click on “Test Audio.” You can then speak and hear a playback. Microphone set-up can be a problem, so if you need help, call TAC at 4822. Recording a Presentation Once your microphone is set up properly, prepare a simple test presentation. For example, you might open and then minimize one or two files in the tray at the bottom of your computer screen, and decide on a few things to say about and point to in the files. In the Tegrity Recorder window, give your test presentation a title (delete the date and time in the “Title” dialog box and replace it with your title), and then click on “Record a Class.” You’ll see the message “Recording will start momentarily.” Quickly click on the name of the file (in the tray at the bottom of the screen) that you want to appear first in your recording.
    3. Very soon the set of icons, below, will appear at the bottom right of your screen. Once they do, you are being recorded, so start talking! To pause recording, click on the two parallel lines; to resume recording, click on them again. To stop recording, click on the small black square. As you are recording, you can move from file to file and place to place on your computer, pointing to information with your mouse and talking about it. Later, your students will be able to see and hear everything you did during the recording. Imagine the possibilities! And you can delete and then re-record a presentation until it suits you. When you are finished with your test, click on the small black square in the set of icons shown above. A dialog box will then appear and ask if you want to upload, preview, or delete the recording. Click on “Preview.” Tegrity will take a few moments to prepare the recording and then show it to you. You’ll probably want to learn from your test, delete it, and then practice recording again. It’s probably a good idea to preview all your recordings before uploading them—at least until your confidence in the results is very high. Once you decide to upload a recording to your course, or LEGIT course shell, Tegrity will require a little while to do so. As you upload more and more recordings, your main Tegrity window will begin to look like the one below, with a list of your recordings. One of the recordings has been selected so you can see that a recording is divided into sections, with a thumbnail representing the beginning of each section. To view the recording from the beginning, you or your students would click on the first thumbnail. Practice these recording basics until you get your presentation skills the way you want them. You will then have the ability to give basic lectures and to demonstrate skills for your Online Instructor Certification. To learn advanced skills, such as videotaping yourself during your recordings, please contact FCTL.
