Are detectives Grissom and Horatio a fake? Was R.D. Junior playing real Sherlock in the film? The Spanish term “novela negra” can stand for different genres in English: detective novel, mystery novel and thriller. Both detective and mystery novel are synonymous, whereas thriller refers to a genre which is on the borderline. In detective novel two variations can be distinguished: English detective novel and American hard-boiled fiction. The roots of mystery stories can be found in the folklore of many different cultures, for emotion, fear and curiosity have always attracted people. In this sense, mystery or detective stories are regarded as popular literature: literary critics haven’t considered their writers serious authors, but the genre is very popular and probably the most widely read. In the 1920s the detective fiction lived a golden age 3
    • in the USA. Several authors invented a detective with certain features that would remain part of the literary history, and which reached the fame thanks to the cinema. Among these authors Chandler and Hammet can be stood out. In Europe, the genre has acquired greater value in the last decades with figures like Mrs. James. Authors like John Le Carre or Stephen King have gained fame and obtained best sellers with spy and mystery stories, although at present, these stories have a new tendency: namely, the psychological thriller, also very much used in movies.
