    • Austria
    • Location
      • Austria is located in central Europe and is landlocked.
      • It is bordered by Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Czech Republic, Slovenia, and Italy.
    • Flag
      • The Austrian flag is the second oldest flag design in the world, it has been in use since 1230.
      • It originated in from Duke Leopold V during the Crusades. After a battle he removed his belt from his blood-drenched white uniform and the white underneath was untouched thus creating the red-white-red scheme.
      • A variation on the flag would be the same red-white-red horizontal stripes with the coat of arms in the center.
    • Physical Features
      • The mountain range runs through the southern part of the country.
      • A contrast to the Alps, the northern region of the country is mostly plains.
      • The largest lake which is on the border of Hungary as well, is Lake Neusiedl .
    • Vienna
      • Vienna is the capital of Austria and also one of the nine states.
      • There is a population of roughly 1.7 million.
      • There is a lot of historical significance in this city and many cultural and beautiful tourist attractions.
    • Education
      • All education at state schools has been free and intermixed genders since 1975.
      • “ Primary” education lasts for a period of four years, after that students attend a “secondary” school for two four-year courses. Pupils can also attend an “intermediate” or “higher vocational” school for five years. After they complete this students are permitted to attend Universities.
      • They also have an intense adult schooling program.
    • Food
      • As with many countries the food differs depending on what region of the country you are in.
      • Some outside influences of Austria food are Germany, Italy, Hungary, and the Balkans.
    • Popular Dishes in Austria
      • Wiener Schnitzel (tenderized veal dipped in eggs, flour, and breadcrumbs and fried, traditionally served with roast potatoes and cranberry sauce)
      • Schlutzkrapfen (ravioli dish with spinach, pumpkin seeds, and goat cheese)
      • Parmesan Schoeberl Suppe (a soup that has a clear broth with diamond-shaped dumplings and parmesan cheese)
      • Apfelstrudel (a dessert similar to apple pie but the strudel is made with filo dough and is filled with almonds as well as apples)
    • Sports
      • Austria is a very sports oriented country and it is actually one of the main tourist attractions.
      • Some of the most popular sports are water sports, skiing, biking, and hiking.
    • Olympics
      • Austria has held the Winter Olympics twice, in 1964 and in 1976.
      • Both of these Olympics were held in the city of Innsbruck.
      • Most likely the Olympics were held in Austria for there wonderful snow sport terrain (especially skiing) in the Alps. Innsbruck also has a spectacular ski jump called the Bergisel Ski Jump.

    • The Von Trapps
      • The Von Trapps are the family that the popular 1965 musiclal “The Sound of Music” was based off of.
      • They lived in Austria but left during the Nazi invasion and came to America.
      • The Sound of Music was really not a good documentation of their actual life, there were ten children, not seven. All of the names, sexes, and ages of the real children were rearranged. Maria came to them as a tutor for one of the children not as a governess to all of them. Maria was not as sweet and perfect as they portrayed her and Georg was not as cold and mean as his character. The bottom line is this was a movie not a documentation of their life.
    • The Alps in Austria
      • The Austrian Alps cover most of the country, the entire western half and most of the central east.
      • The Alps also have a lot to offer giving countless numbers of hiking and biking trails, ski resorts, and not to mention prestigious views.
