Is Social Media a Fad?
We are no longer limited to being consumers of information. We are now collaborators ... producers of information Every person has the ability to contribute ideas and experiences to the larger body of knowledge that is the internet
Gen Y is taking over the Web Gen Y (18-32) – and can be as young as 5 Gen X (33-44) Younger Boomers (45-54) Older Boomers (55-63) Silent Generation (64-72) G.I. Generation (73+)
How Gen Y is different They’re plugged in TV is background noise They care what their friends think Work isn’t their whole world Multitasking
What makes Gen Y people different is the way they are spending more time with the Internet than TV, and also use the the centrepiece of their life. It’s how they consuming media internet as the hub of their media activity communicate with each other and their world
Fastest growing age for using the internet? In 2005 2-5 yr olds In 2009 70-75 yr olds Source: “Generations Online in 2009,” , Pew Internet & American Life Project, January 28, 2009

Digital Education Revolution “ In coming years, a critical component of a world class education system in Australia will be use of a computer and access to reliable, high speed broadband. This will provide closer links between schools, teachers, students and parents, and help realise the true potential of e-education. It will change the way teachers teach, and the way students learn. “ Kevin Rudd, 2007

New media literacies
“What changes must we make in our teaching as it becomes easier to bring primary resources to our students? How do we need to rethink our ideas of literacy when we must prepare our students to become not only readers and writers, but editors and collaborators and publishers as well? What needs to change about our curriculum when our students have the ability to reach far beyond our classroom walls? How can we as learners begin to take advantage of the opportunities these tools present, so we may understand more clearly the pedagogies of using them in the classroom?” Will Richardson, author of Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms
Create Collaborate Communicate Evaluate This shift from a page-based to a screen-based society is causing a drastic change in literacy .... It’s a different way of encountering communication or thought or human expression.

A SOCIAL NETWORK... Is a social structure (participatorycommunity) Usersestablishrelationships Basedontheircommoninterests
The right social network What do you want out of a social network? Are you looking into social networks for professional reasons? If you are passionate about a particular subject, a niche social network with a specific theme can be a terrific place to start. Because it matches your interest, you will be more likely to get involved in the community, and getting involved is what social networking is really all about. Most social networks contain user-created groups that help people with similar interest find each other. In education, the ning is becoming the social network of choice
www.ning.com
What is Ning?
What is NING? allows people with common interests to share ideas and learn from one another. It is a platform for creating social networks where members are able to upload material, make comments and share ideas and experiences relating to a particular topic. It’s like getting a group of people together in the same room and discussing similar interests – except it is done using a virtual environment and not in ‘real time’.
