  2. 2. Day 5 - Notes <ul><li>(TCI ch5) </li></ul><ul><li>Essential Question: How are your rights defined and protected under the Constitution? </li></ul>
  3. 3. Defining your Rights and Liberties <ul><li>civil liberties - basic freedoms that are considered birthright of all individuals: religion, speech, etc. </li></ul><ul><li>civil rights - guarantees of equal treatment under the law, to citizens: jury trial, voting, etc. </li></ul>
  4. 4. First Amendment Rights <ul><li>Freedom of religion - establishment clause - separation of church and state; free exercise clause - people can practice religion of their choice </li></ul><ul><li>Freedom of speech - except for libel (written false statement meant to cause harm) and slander (spoken false statement meant to cause harm </li></ul>

First Amendment Rights <ul><li>Freedom of the Press - makes clear free speech includes the media; prior restraint (gov’t prevent material from being published) is prohibited </li></ul><ul><li>Freedom of Assembly - </li></ul><ul><li>Right to Petition - ask gov’t to right a wrong “redress of grievances” </li></ul>
