  7. 7. 12 the Berkeley the Berkeley 13 Here Comes tHe the aGe of innovation
  8. 8. 14 the Berkeley the Berkeley 15 more than a year after the financial collapse of september 2008, it would seem that we are entering a new era, the challenges of the past months are being replaced with bigger questions about our long term future, far from being the end of life as we know it, this could signal a very exciting period in innovation, investment and creativity. looking back it seems extraordinary that we allowed things sHoCk and to go so far, that we didn’t snap out of oPPortunity We have suffered an extraordinary shock, one with our zombie like greed, exploitation, a global impact which has allowed us to gain a more balanced perspective. In the aftermath we have a consumption and trust in the system window of opportunity to make profound changes, anyone who has read Naomi Klein’s Shock Doctrine will recognize the reference to ‘disaster capitalism’, before we were forced to. Perhaps however I am suggesting that the same principles could be applied for the benefit of the majority rather even more shocking is the profound than the profit of a minority. The situation had clearly become so bad that things sense of relief many people are feeling could not stay the way they were, aside from politics and business we are seeing a significant shift in public attitudes and behaviour. This has the potential to and beginning to describe – the build momentum and support profound changes in what the public will support, who will hold power concept that some balance is being and wealth for the next 20 years or more and what they will do with that power. The old rules restored. i don’t want to diminish the no longer apply and the first to understand the new ones will win. seriousness of the situation and the very real consequences of what is an unprecedented economic crisis however there is a silver lining – and it’s a pretty big one.
  9. 9. 16 the Berkeley the Berkeley 17 “This has the potential to build momentum and support profound changes in what the public will support, who will hold power and wealth for the next 20 years or more and what they will do with that power. The old rules no longer apply and the first to reduCed Personal real Problems understand the Pressure need real solutions new ones will win.” For the first time in 20 years we don’t have to worry about buying another new car, moving house, getting The problems we face now are so big and so real that management consultants won’t be able to solve them a promotion and being up on what ‘it’ bag to carry. with powerpoint presentations, these problems We have the freedom to think, to challenge our own will require us to work together at home, at work, values and behaviour personally, professionally and as families, communities, nations and international profoundly. For the first time in a long time we feel coalitions. The issues we are all preoccupied with free to make changes in our lives and re-evaluate our extend beyond economics and politics and cannot priorities. We might be choosing to work less before be solved by the financial community or politicians we are forced to do so and finding it’s a positive alone. This is the real opportunity - Who is good at choice. We might be waking to the realisation that managing conflicting agendas and solving problems? we had not done those things we wanted to because Not the money men and clearly not our current breed we were too busy planning what to buy next. of politicians. This shift is like an overnight collective maturity, The people most able to respond to this crisis rather than being immersed in my current and create a progressive agenda are the thinkers - preoccupations I find myself thinking about lying on philosophers, scientists, engineers and designers. my deathbed am I going to look back and wish I had Complex problems require genuine innovation and nailed that presentation?, been upgraded on my business seems to be waking up to that realization, London/NY flight? lived in an even bigger, cooler loft? a new dynamic is emerging. The world will be forced – no, the truth is I won’t remember any of those things to innovate to solve the energy crisis, nations will but I would probably kill for a chance to do some of need to innovate to reconnect with their populations the things I take for granted just one more time – and solve the very real social problems affecting a cuddle with my three year old daughter, the chance health, education, crime and well being. We are to design something really beautiful and useful, the entering a phase of genuine innovation, resilience, ability to help someone who really needs it, a chance renewal and a new kind of reward. It is time to be to talk to my parents again. This may seem super creative, to focus on well being, to challenge sentimental but it makes sense – perhaps using this the rules of the past - after decades of fear and perspective we can all review how we spend our time introspection we are entering a new age of at work and at home – working on projects that make thoughtfulness and fun! a difference, standing up for what we believe is right, The Editor looking after the people we love and enjoying editor@maybourne.com ourselves more in the process.
