INTRODUCTION <ul><li>Definition : Virtual Learning is a term, frequently used interchangeably with distance learning, on-line learning & e-learning . </li></ul><ul><li>This virtual learning needs “a medium” to communicate with the learner. </li></ul><ul><li>History: 19 th Century It was the time when the institutionally sponsored distance education begin and it was in United States. </li></ul>

VLE & MLE <ul><li>VLE is a computer system which supports online learning. </li></ul><ul><li>it allows students to interact with learning materials, fellow students and tutors. </li></ul><ul><li>An MLE included both the VLE and the systems surrounding it which include student records, learning resource management systems, timetabling and financial systems . </li></ul>While originally created for distance education, VLEs are now most often used to support traditional face to face classroom activities The most popular presentation tool used by lecturers worldwide is Microsoft PowerPoint

Basic models of on-line courses <ul><ul><li>Content + support model (relatively static e.g. web package) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Wrap-around model (course materials wrapped around by activities such as on-line discussions) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Integrated model course is defined by collaborative activities, discussions and joint assignments. </li></ul></ul>Essential questions, standards, readings, publication links, and much more, helps students to full fill there queries.

Limitations <ul><li>The IT staff who will have to install the software and keep it running </li></ul><ul><li>Course leaders who will have to redevelop courses to make use of the VLE </li></ul><ul><li>Administrative staff who will, for instance, register students into the MLE which will then pass the information to the VLE </li></ul><ul><li>Resource centre managers who will need to make sure that suitable materials are available for the students. </li></ul><ul><li>All of this requires a major staff development effort </li></ul>

Conclusions <ul><li>Problems of under-funded higher education will not be solved by adopting VLEs </li></ul><ul><li>Blended approaches to teaching may offer optimum solutions </li></ul><ul><li>Costs and benefits of adopting a VLE need a careful evaluation </li></ul><ul><li>VLEs are changing the way learning and teaching are delivered, and will soon be ubiquitous </li></ul><ul><li>Libraries must reclaim their traditional role as resource managers through a new emphasis on collaboration </li></ul><ul><li>Technical solutions will stimulate organisational solutions </li></ul>
