  2. 2. Functions of MR Fluids These are liquids that change their propertieswhen we apply a magnetic field to them. When the magnet is in place the MR Fluidturns into solid. When the magnet is removed the solidinstantly reverts to liquid

What is MR fluid? Soft magnetic material in a carrier oil. Silicon oil or even corn syrup is mixed with the MRF toprevent rust. Typical MR fluid contains 20-40% by volume ofrelatively pure, soft iron particles. Rheology or to the phenomena of flowing matter Is type of rheological fluids whose yield stress canbe varied by an applied magnetic field. A typical MR fluid consists of micron sizedmagnetizable iron/ferrous particles suspended in abase fluid like silicone oil or water.
  4. 4. Applications of MR Fluid Vehicle SuspensionDampers The MR damper has a built-in MR valve across whichthe MR fluid is forced. Thepiston of the MR damperacts as an electromagnet withthe required number of coilsto produce the appropriatemagnetic field. Also the MRdamper has a run-throughshaft to avoid anaccumulator.

Cont’ Applications MR Transmission Clutches They are used in automotivepower train to transmit torquefrom the engine to thetransmission and the vehicle.The MR sponge clutch may beused to provide launch control ofan automobile thereby achievingsmooth vehicle launch.The MRF clutch thus mayreplace the existing torqueconverters and therefore helpincrease the fuel economy.
