Managing images - Presentation Transcript

  1. managing images
  2. What is an IMS ?
  3. Management call it: Image Management System
  4. Some staff call it: Image Mangling Service
  5. Soon, staff will call it: Input Metadata Slavery
  6. The wise call it: Image Master Storage
  7. A story about Jeff
  8. Jeff is a scientist at the Museum
  9. Jeff takes lots of photos as part of his work
  10. Jeff stores his photos everywhere
  11. i:drive, j:drive, z:drive, w:drive, x:drive, CD, his garage…
  12. Unfortunately, Jeff dies in a horrible car accident
  13. At some point, Jeff’s peers start looking for Jeff’s photos.
  14. They never find all of Jeff’s photos.
  15. Jeff’s peers curse him.
  16. Moral : If Jeff had stored all of his master images in the IMS, his peers would have loved him long after his passing.
  17. A story about Betty
  18. Betty works on a quarterly Museum publication.
  19. Betty deals with lots of photos from external suppliers.
  20. These photos are often only used once. Betty stores them on CDs .
  21. Unfortunately, Betty develops an ice-smoking habit and loses her short term memory.
  22. When Betty is asked about the legal use of some of the photos, she has no idea and no records .
  23. Moral : If Betty had stored all images in the IMS, with all usage and copyright details, she (and the Museum) would have been ok.
  24. A story about Zack
  25. Zack also takes lots of photos for the Museum.
  26. Zack’s photos are all amazing shots of lizards .
  27. Unlike Jeff and Betty, Zack also puts all of his photos into the IMS .
  28. Unfortunately, Zack doesn’t add metadata as he is too busy and too important.
  29. Months later, someone needs a lizard photo.
  30. They search the IMS for “lizard”, using a variety of search terms .
  31. They can’t find a lizard photo. (Despite the fact there are 300 excellent photos in the system)
  32. They curse the IMS.
  33. The Museum eventually tracks down the non-metadata-inputing Zack . Zack is sacked .
  34. Moral : The input of metadata must become a planned and controlled core function . Otherwise the system will break down.
  35. What’s in it for you?
  36. One place for images means easy retrieval .
  37. Detailed information is stored with images. (Especially copyright and usage).
  38. More local disk space !
  39. Thanks
