Video Art Technology
An Introduction
Over the last five years I have researched video wall technology and
designed applications for its use in many different areas. Ranging
from museums, live events, restaurants, hotels, nightclubs, urban
environments, research facilities and private residencies.
Technology has always fascinated me and I constantly seek to find new
ways of working with emerging equipment and materials, incorporating
new concepts into production environments. Through experimentation and
unconventional methods, I explore new technology, bending it to the
needs of my projects. An example of this would be the use of motion or
optical sensors combined with custom computer software, which allows
the movement of a person to adjust parameters, such as color or
effects, of a video image.
Recent advances in computers and projection technology have enabled
increasingly efficient ways of working with high-resolution media,
achieving stunning visual results and yielding the prospect to now
work with video in much more fluid ways, revealing possibilities never
before imagined.
The concept of video art is often considered to be the making of films
or creating of advertisements. Having worked with both domains of
thought, I prefer the domain in which video art would be considered a
lighting experience that doesn't necessarily incorporate text or story
and is more associated with the ability to control aspects of light to
allow the present architectural expression remain.
Through the subtle use of video editing software and live manipulation
of video, images can be digitally carved or masked to map toward
specific areas of a surface, such as the façade of a building or an
interior. Blending with the complete design and decor of a building,
video content can match every aspect of space, adding a dynamic and
beautiful addition to any environment. I call this process
architectural video mapping.
