    Act1 Act1 Presentation Transcript

    • Take Note
      • A person may profit by noticing the first intimation of the spirit of revelation ; for instance, when you feel pure intelligence flowing into you, it may give you sudden strokes of ideas, so that by noticing it, you may find it fulfilled the same day or soon; (i.e.) Those things that were presented unto your minds by the spirit of God, will come to pass; and thus by learning the spirit of God and understanding it, you may grow into the principle of revelation, until you become perfect in Christ Jesus.
      • (Teachings, p. 151)

    • The Holy Ghost
      • The Holy Ghost is the third member of the Godhead...he teaches and testifies with divine power and clarity. His witnesses may go unheard or unheeded, forsaken or denied, but it is never misunderstood. “The Holy Ghost is a revelator” (TPJS, 328). That which is received of Him has a more powerful effect upon the soul than anything else received in any other way. A Millennium of experience through site, sound, touch, taste, smell, and all powers of the universe combined cannot approach the sublime and complete experience of one brief moment under the influence of the Holy Ghost. (Keith Mcmullin)
      • An intelligent being, in the image of God, possesses every organ, attribute, sense, sympathy, affection that is possessed by God himself. The gift of the Holy Ghost adapts itself to all these organs or attributes. It quickens all the intellectual faculties, increases, enlarges, expands, and purifies all the natural passions and affections, and adapts them, by the gift of wisdom to their lawful use. It inspires, develops, cultivates and matures all the fine tuned sympathies and joys, tastes kindred feelings and affections of our nature. It inspires virtue, kindness, goodness, tenderness, gentleness, and charity.
      • It develops beauty of person and form, and features. It tends to health, vigor, animation and social feeling. It invigorates all the faculties of the physical and intellectual man. It strengthens and gives tone to the nerves. In short it is, as it were marrow to the bone and joy to the heart, light to the eyes, music to the ears, and life to the whole being.
      • In the presence of such persons one feels to enjoy the light of their countenances, as the genial rays of the sunbeam. Their very atmosphere diffuses a thrill, a warm glow of pure gladness and sympathy...
      • (Parley P. Pratt, Key to Science of Theology, p.67)
    • Spiritual Vision
      • Teach your students to see with the eyes they possessed before they had a mortal body; teach them to hear with the ears they possessed before they were born; teach them to push back the curtains of mortality and see into the eternities. Youth must be taught to expand their minds and to think in spiritual terms. They must know that there was no beginning and there will be no end. Then they will begin to understand the plan of redemption.

      • There is no spirit but what it was pure and holy when it came here form the celestial world…He is the Father of our spirits; and if we could know, understand and do His will, every soul would be prepared to return back into His presence. And when they get there they would see they they had formerly lived there for ages, that they had previously been acquainted with every nook and corner, with the palaces walks and gardens; and they would embrace their Father, and He would embrace them and say, My Son My Daughter, I have you again; and the child would say, ‘ “Oh My Father My Father, I am here again’’’ Brigham Young

    •
    • What is my Heavenly Father like?
      • God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens! That is the great secret. If the veil were rent today, and the great God who holds this world in its orbit, and who upholds all the worlds and all things by his power, was to make himself visible,--I say if you were to see Him today, you would see him like a man in form --like yourselves in all the person, image, and very form as a man; for Adam was created in the very fashion, image and likeness of God, and received instruction from, and walked , talked and conversed with Him, as one man talks and communes with another.
      • (The King Follet Discourse-Times and Seasons Aug. 15, 1844--Joseph Smith)
      • “ During the winter of 1833 we had a number of prayer meetings in the Prophet’s chamber. In one of those meetings the Prophet told us, if we could humble ourselves before God, and exercise strong faith, we should see the face of the Lord. And about midday, the visions of my mind were opened, and the eyes of my understanding were enlightened, and I saw the form of a man, most lovely. The visage of his face was sound and fair as the sun. His hair a bright silver gray, curled in most majestic form, His eyes a keen penetrating blue, and the skin of his neck a most beautiful white. And He was covered from neck to the feet with a loose garment, pure white, whiter than any garment I have ever before seen. His countenance was most penetrating, and yet most lovely...And while I was endeavoring to comprehend the whole personage from head to feet, it slipped from me. But it left on my mind the impression of love, for months, that I never felt before to that degree.”
      • (An abridged Record of the Life of John Murdock, page 23, Church Archives)
    • Is Heavenly Father Happy?
      • I am perfectly satisfied that my Father and my God is a cheerful, pleasant, lively and good-natured being. Why? Because I am cheerful pleasant, lively and good natured when I have His spirit . That is one reason why I know and another is – the Lord said through the prophet Joseph Smith, I delight in a glad heart and a cheerful countenance. That arises from the perfection of his attributes. (Heber C. Kimball, JD 4:222; 3 Ne. 28:10; Moses 7:28-32)
    • Has God Our Heavenly Father already successfully used his Plan?

      • Moses 7:29-30
      • D&C 132:28-37
    •
    • Did I live in a house in the Pre-earth life?
      • I want to tell you each and every one of you. That you are well acquainted with God our Heavenly Father, or the great Elohim. You are well acquainted with him, for there is not a soul of but what has lived in his house and dwelt with him year after year ; ... the fact is you have merely forgotten what you did know.
      • (DBY--Brigham Young, p. 50)
    • How well do I Know My Father and His Son my Redeemer?
      • We once knew well our elder Brother and our Father in Heaven. We rejoiced at the prospect of earth life that could make it possible for us to have a fullness of joy. We could hardly wait to demonstrate, to our Father and our Brother, the Lord, how much we loved them and how we would be obedient to them in spite of the earthly opposition of the evil one.
      • Now we are here. Our memories are veiled. We are showing God and ourselves what we can do. Nothing is going to startle us more when we pass through the veil to the other side than to realize how well we know our Father and how familiar his face is to us.

    • How long did I live in His house?
      • ....Man as a spirit, was begotten and born of Heavenly Parents, and reared to maturity in the eternal mansions of the Father; that man is the offspring of celestial parentage; and that all men and women are in the similitude of the universal Father and Mother, and are literally the sons and daughters of deity.

    • Our Relationship to the creation:
      • Under the direction of the Father Jesus Christ created this earth...no doubt others helped him...Adam helped to form this earth... I have a strong view or conviction that there were others who also assisted them...perhaps Noah and Enoch and why not Joseph Smith...and those who were appointed to be rulers before the earth was formed. (DS 1:74-75)
    •
    • What Can You Teach Me About Where I Lived Before I Was Born on Earth?
      • The spirits of men and women are eternal(TPJS p.208, 157-158). All are sons and daughters of god and lived in a premortal life as his spirit children (Heb.12:9; Num. 16:22;Jer. 1:5; Eph. 1:4-5; 2 Tim. 1:9; Orson Pratt JD 15;249; D&c 76:24; Acts 17:29; Romans 8:16-the play and the plan -BKP -p.3, 7 may 1995)
    • What Was My Spirit Body Capable of...?
      • All those salient truths which come home so forcibly to the head and heart seem but the awakening of the memories of the spirit. Can we know anything here that we did not know before we came? Are not the means of knowledge in the first estate equal to those of this? I think that the spirit, before and after this probation, possesses greater facilities, aye, manifold greater, for the acquisition of knowledge, than while manacled and shut up in the prison‑house of mortality.
      • ( JFS-gospel doctrine p.13)
    •
    •   What is my spirit made of, who’s genetics do I possess?
      • The pedigree of your spirit can be written on a single line. You are a child of God!
        • Elder Boyd K. Packer, April 1989
        • The mind or intelligence which man possesses is co-equal(co-eternal) with God Himself...the intelligence of spirits had no beginning, neither will it have an end...Intelligence is eternal and exists upon a self-existent principle. It is a spirit from age to age, and there is no creation about it .
        • (The King Follet Discourse--Times and Seasons Aug. 15, 1844-- Joseph Smith )
    •   Is Gender a Pre-mortal Characteristic?
      • We were spiritually begotten children of heavenly parents.
      • Acts 17:29-30; Psalms 82:6, D&C 76:24; 77:2, 132:63; Num. 16:22; D&c 77:2; Ether 3:6-16; All human beings --male and female (abr. 4:27; Moses 6:9; D&C 132:63)--are created in the image of god. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parent, and as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual pre-mortal mortal and eternal identity and purpose. In the pre-mortal realm, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshiped god as their eternal father and accepted his plan by which his children could obtain a physical body and gain earthly experience to progress toward perfection and ultimately attain eternal life. The divine plan of happiness enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave.
      • (The proclamation to the world on the family, FP-Sept. 23, 1995).
    • In Whose Image Was My Spirit Born? .
      • The spirits of men and women are eternal. All are sons and daughters of God and lived in a pre-mortal life as his spirit children(D&C 77:2). The spirit of each individual is in the likeness of the person in mortality, male and female. All are in the image of Heavenly parents.
      • (The Play and the Plan--Boyd K. Packer)
    • . What Is My Spirit Made Of, What Does It Look Like?
      • The Spirit of man consists of an organization of the elements of spiritual matter in the likeness and after the pattern of the fleshly tabernacle. It possesses, in fact all the organs and parts exactly corresponding to the outward tabernacle. (Parley P. Pratt, Key to the Science of theology, p. 79)
    • The Grand Council What Happened There?
      • In the council of the Gods(TPJS 348-349) the plan of the eternal Father was sustained. (Alma 34:9) It provided for the creation of an earth (Abr. 3:24) where upon his children would receive physical bodies (Abr. 4:26-27; Moses 6:3-10,22,59), and would be tested according to his commandments (Abr. 3:25). A grand council in Heaven was convened. The divine plan required one to be sent as a Savior and Redeemer to fulfill the plan of the Father. The first born of the eternal Father Jehovah, willingly volunteered and was chosen. Most sustained his choice. Others rebelled and there was a war in Heaven. Satan and those who followed him in rebellion against the Father’s plan were cast out and denied mortality.
      • (The Play and the Plan - Boyd K. Packer, 7 May 1995)
      •
    • What Did Heavenly Father Teach Us There?
      • D&C 138:56 --we were all created untold ages before we were placed on this earth. We discover from Abr. 3:22-28, that it was before the earth was formed that the plan of salvation was presented to the spirits, ‘intelligences’.

    • Was the Savior Foreordained? (Abraham 3:27-28; Heb. 1:6; D&c 93:21; FP -1916; MD -P.281; John 17:5; Moses 1:32-33; )
      • As the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth - (Moses 1:27-35; 6:63; 7:36; John 1:1-3,14 ; Hel. 1:2; Col. 1:15-17; Mosiah 3:5-8)
      • As the Exemplar to teach and model the perfect life Teach the plan-- Mosiah 3:6; 3 Ne. 18:24; 3 Ne. 11:11
      • As the Redeemer and Atoner -Isa. 53, 61; Alma7:11; Mosiah 4:7
    • Was the Savior Foreordained? (Abraham 3:27-28; Heb. 1:6; D&c 93:21; FP -1916; MD -P.281; John 17:5; Moses 1:32-33; )

      •
    • Atonement
      • Now our Lords jurisdiction and power extend far beyond the limits of this one small earth on which we dwell. He is, under the Father, the creator of worlds without number. Moses 1:33 - And ...the Atonement of Christ applies to an infinite number of earths. (MD -BRM p.65,642)
      •
    • The Godhead Made a Covenant --
      • Everlasting covenant was made between three personages before the organization of the earth, and it relates to their dispensation of things to men on the earth; These personages, according to Abraham’s record, are called, God the first, the creator; God the second, the redeemer; And God the third the testator.
      • (MSS--TPJS, p.190).
    • The War in Heaven -(BD - P.788)
      • A. This term arises out of Rev. 12:7 -The war broke out because one third of the spirits refused to accept the appointment of Jesus Christ as their Savior....Lucifer and his followers wanted salvation to come automatically to all who passed through mortality, without regard to individual preference, agency or voluntary dedication (Isa. 14:12-20; Luke 10:18; Rev. 12:4-13; D&C 29:36-38). The spirits who thus rebelled and persisted were thrust out of heaven and cast down to earth without mortal bodies, ‘and thus came the devil and his angels’(Abr. 3:24-28).
      •
    • The Contention in Heaven
      • . The contention in heaven was--Jesus said there would be certain souls that would not be saved; And the devil said he could save them all, and laid his plans before the grand council, who gave their vote in favor of Jesus Christ. So the devil rose up in rebellion against God, and was cast down, with all who put up their heads for him.(Moses 4:1-4; Abr. 3:23-28)
      • (TPJS, p.357)
    • Lucifer became the devil
      • There is of course a villain in all this, the adversary, the schemer, the destroyer. He got off track in Act 1. He has sworn to spoil the plan for everyone. And he has legions of angels, dark angels, to help him do it. He too has a plan called the cunning plan (2 Ne.9:28), a very subtle plan (Alma 12:4-5), a secret plan (Helaman 2:8), the plan of destruction (3 Ne. 1:16 )
      • (BKP - The Play and the Plan, p.4)
    • The House of Israel
      • . The house of Israel was organized and other noble and great ones were foreordained (abr. 3:22-23; Alma 13:3-4)
      •
      • We covenanted to help save our heavenly family-- D&C 138:53-56--
    • We Agreed to Be Saviors
      • In our preexistent state, in the great day of the council, we made a certain agreement with the almighty . the lord proposed a plan, conceived by him. We accepted it. Since the plan is intended for all men, we became parties to the salvation of every person under that plan. We agreed, right then and there to not only be saviors for ourselves but measurably, saviors for the whole human family. We went into partnership with the lord . The working out of the plan became not merely the fathers work and the saviors work, but also our work. The least of us the humblest is in partnership with the almighty in achieving the purposes of the eternal plan of salvation ...By that doctrine with the lord at the head we become, saviors on mount Zion, all committed to the great plan of offering salvation to the untold number of spirits.
      • (The worth of souls is great, the Utah genealogical and historical magazine, Oct. John A. Widstoe)
    • Where you will be born and how you will serve was appointed-
      • Those who kept their first estate (you are among them) were to be added upon with a physical body and were permitted to live upon this earth in this planned second estate (Abr. 3:26). Each was appointed the times and bounds of their habitation ( Acts 17:26; Duet 32:8). Some were foreordained to be prophets (Abr.3:23; Alma 13:7-9; TPJS 365)
    • Foreordination Was Based on Valiancy
      • During our long existence in the premortal realm some of our fathers children proved themselves more valiant than others- after the war in heaven one third of our fathers children were cast out.
      • Although one third of the spirits became devils, the remaining two thirds were not all equally valiant, there being every degree of devotion to Christ and the father among them. The most diligent were chosen to be rulers in the kingdom (Abr.3:22-23). (BD -p.788).
    • The Family of Israel Was Organized and Given Assignments
      • Because of their faithfulness in the preexistence the Family of Israel were a distinct and noble people chosen in the premortal realm to rule and lead the family of God in mortality- Jesus Christ was first among all these (Abr.3:22-24)
      • Israel is an eternal people. Members of that chosen race first gained ...their assignments in the world of the spirits...
    • World History and Birth Location
      • You are all the sons and daughters of God. Your spirits were created and lived as organized intelligences before the world was. You have been blessed to have a physical body because of your obedience to certain commandments in that pre-mortal state. You are now born into a family to which you have come, into the nations through which you have come, as a reward for the kind of lives you lived before you came here and at a time in the world's history, as the Apostle Paul taught the men of Athens and as the Lord revealed to Moses, determined by the faithfulness of each of those who lived before this world was created. (Harold B. Lee, Stand Ye In Holy Places , p. 9‑10.)
      •
    • Michael Was Foreordained
      • Our great prince, Michael , known in mortality as Adam, stands next to Christ in the eternal plan of salvation and progression. In pre‑existence Michael was the most intelligent, powerful, and mighty spirit son of God, who was destined to come to this earth, excepting only the Firstborn, under whose direction and pursuant to whose counsel he worked. "He is the father of the human family, and presides over the spirits of all men." (Teachings, p. 157.) The name Michael apparently, and with propriety, means one "who is like God." (Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine , p. 491.)
    • Mortal Circumstances Depended on Our Pre-earth Conduct
      • All these rewards were seemingly promised, or foreordained, before the world was. Surely these matters must have been determined by the kind of lives we had lived in that premortal spirit world. Some may question these assumptions, but at the same time they will accept without any question the belief that each one of us will be judged when we leave this earth according to his or her deeds during our lives here in mortality. Isn't it just as reasonable to believe that what we have received here in this earth life was given to each of us according to the merits of our conduct before we came here? (Harold B. Lee, Stand Ye In Holy Places , p. 11.)
      •
    • We Developed Talents in the Preexistance
      • To this problem there is no easy answer. Every person stands alone in choosing his beliefs and electing the course he will pursue. No two persons are born with the same talents and capacities; No two are rooted in the same soil of circumstances; Each is unique. The cares of this world, gold and honor and power and renown, the lusts of the flesh the chains of past sins and a thousand other things ‑‑ all exert their influence upon us.
      • But in the final sense the answer stems back to premortality. We all lived as spirit beings, as children of the eternal father, for an infinitely long period of time in the premortal existence. There we developed talents, gifts, and aptitudes; There our capacities and abilities took form; There, by obedience to law, we were endowed with the power, in one degree or another, to believe the truth and follow the promptings of the spirit. And the talent of greatest worth was that of spirituality, for it enables us to hearken to the holy spirit and accept that gospel which prepares us for eternal life. (Bruce R. McConkie, A new witness for the articles of faith , p. 33‑34.)
    • Intimidating to Teach
      • If we knew some of the assignments given to some of them (seminary and institute students) in the preexistance, it might be almost too intimidated to teach them . (Neil A. Maxwell, An Evening with a General Authority, Sept. 1975)
    • You and I Were Held in Reserve
      • For nearly six thousand years the lord has held you in reserve to make your appearance in the final days before the second coming of the lord. Every previous gospel dispensation has drifted into apostasy, but ours will not. True, there will be some individuals who will fall away but the kingdom of god will remain intact to welcome the return of its head--even Jesus Christ. While our generation will be comparable in wickedness to the days of Noah, when the lord cleansed the earth by a flood, there is a major difference this time, and that is that god has saved for the final inning some of his strongest children, who will help bear off the kingdom triumphantly. And that is where you come in you are the generation that must be prepared to meet your god. And through the ages the prophets have looked down through the corridors of time to our day.
    • You and I Were Held in Reserve
      • Billions of deceased and those yet to be born have their eyes on us. Make no mistake about it you are a marked generation. There has never been more expected of the faithful in such a short period of time than there is of us. Never before on the face of this earth have the forces of good and the forces of evil been as well organized. Now is the great day of the devils power, with the greatest mass murderers of all time living in our day. But, no is the great day of the lords power, with the greatest number of priesthood holders on the earth. And the showdown is fast approaching. Each day the forces of evil and the forces of good pick up new recruits. Each day we personally make many decisions that show where our support will go. The final outcome is certain. The forces of righteousness will finally win. What remains to be seen is where each of us personally, now and in the future, will stand in this fight. And how tall we will stand. Will we be true to our foreordained mission?! (Ezra Taft Benson, InHis steps, BYU Sunday, march 4, 1979).
    • We Shouted for Joy
      • In our pre-mortal state we shouted for joy as the plan of salvation was unfolded to our view (see job 38:7). It was there our elder brother Jesus, the firstborn in the spirit of our father's children, volunteered to redeem us from our sins. He became our foreordained savior, the lamb "slain from the foundation of the world" (Moses 7:47). ( Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson , p. 23.)
      •
    • Joseph Smith Was Foreordained
      • Joseph smith was foreordained in the councils of eternity, before the foundations of the earth were laid, to be a prophet of god in the last days and to preside over the dispensation of the fullness of times. This call to come into mortality and stand as a revealer of truth and a witness of Christ came because of his valiance and devotion in the pre-mortal first estate. He is numbered with those who were "called and prepared from the foundation of the world according to the foreknowledge of god, on account of their exceeding faith and good works" (alma 13:3), as these works were manifest during the long ages they dwelt in the divine presence. (Bruce R. McConkie, A new witness for the articles of faith , p. 3.)
    • We Had Some Foreknowledge of Life’s Test’s-
      • Life's difficulties were known in pre-mortal life. I dare say that in the spirit world, when it was proposed to us to come into this probation, and pass through the experience that we are now receiving, it was not altogether pleasant and agreeable; The prospects were not so delightful in all respects as might have been desired. Yet there is no doubt that we saw and understood clearly there that, in order to accomplish our exaltation and glory, this was a necessary experience; And however disagreeable it might have appeared to us, we were willing to conform to the will of god, and consequently we are here. • Pre-mortal Priesthood
      • There was a church organization there. Priesthood without question had been conferred and the leaders were chosen to officiate. Ordinances pertaining to that preexistance were required and the love of god prevailed. Under such conditions it was natural for our father to discern and choose those who would be most worthy and evaluate the talents of each individual. He knew not only what each of us could do but what we would do when put to the test and responsibility was given. Then, when the time came for our habitation on mortal earth, all things were prepared and the servants of the lord chosen and ordained to their respective missions. (Joseph Fielding Smith, T he Way to Perfection , 1:57)

    • Premortal Ministrations
      • - (BD - angels p.608).
      • Who created this earth? It is true that Adam helped to form this earth. He labored with our savior Jesus Christ. I have a strong view or conviction that there were others also who assisted them. Perhaps Noah and Enoch; And why not Joseph smith, and those who were appointed to be rulers before the earth was formed (A br. 3:22-24; Joseph Fielding Smith, DS -1:74-75).
    • Women and Men Were Called and Chosen in the preexistance
      • Remember in the world before we came here, faithful women were given certain assignments, while faithful men were foreordained to certain priesthood tasks. While we do not now remember the particulars, this does not alter the glorious reality of what we once agreed to. You are accountable for those things which long ago were expected of you just as are those we sustain as prophets and apostles... This leaves much to be done by way of parallel personal development--for both men and women.
        • This statement suggests that before we were born, male and female, we made certain commitments and that we agreed to come to this earth with great, rich, but different gifts. We were called, male and female, to do great works with separate approaches and separate assignments.
    • The Gods are our friends (Moses7:62-63)
      • -The Apostles and prophets, when speaking of our relationship to God, say that we are flesh of his flesh and bone of His bone, God is our Father, and Jesus Christ is our Elder Brother, and both are our everlasting friends.
      • (DBY--p.38)
    • Did We Choose Our Families?
      • We have no scriptural justification, however, for the belief that we had the privilege of choosing our parents and our life companions in the spirit world. This belief has been advocated by some, and it is possible that in some instances it is true, but it would require too great a stretch of the imagination to believe it to be so in all, or even in the majority of cases. Most likely we came where those in authority decided to send us. Our agency may not have been exercised to the extent of making choice of parents and posterity. (Joseph fielding smith jr., The way to perfection , p. 44‑45.)
    • The Earth and the solar system were central players in the plan:
      • When the earth was framed and brought into existence and man was placed upon it, it was near the throne of our Father in heaven. And when man fell... the earth fell into space, and took up its abode in this planetary system, and the sun became our light... This is the glory the earth came from, and when it is glorified it will return again unto the presence of the Father, and it will dwell there, and these intelligent beings that I am looking at, if they live worthy of it, will dwell upon this earth. (Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses , Vol.17, p.144.)
      •
      • ...this earth, which had fled and fallen from where it was first organized, near the planet Kolob. (John Taylor, The Mormon , August 26, 1857.)
      •
      • The earth no longer [at the transgression of Adam] retained its standing in the presence of Jehovah; but was hurled into the immensity of space; and there to remain till it has filled up the time of its bondage to sin and Satan. It was immediately cursed, and Adam, and Eve were obliged to procure their food and raiment by the sweat of the brow. The beasts became ferocious, and went prowling about the wilderness seeking the inferior animals for a prey.
      • But says one, wherein did the sin of man affect the whole creation? We answer; that Adam was placed in the garden or capitol of the whole earth, and power was given unto him to sway his scepter over all things upon earth; therefore, when he fell from the presence of the Lord, the whole of his dominions fell also...
