Review on Susan Sontag By Eve Obayoriade Leah Mulhern Helena O’Nions
On reading the presentation we found the resource pack had covered a wide selection of works, clearly informing us of Sontag's history and works in a brief concise format.
The Biography was minimalistic but gave all the necessary information on her life and background.
We found the bibliography useful in that it enabled a direct route to the source of some of their information for our own further research.
The précis of ‘The Volcano Lover’ provided us with an overview of what the novel is about. It initiated an interest in her works however we didn’t feel it was informative enough in terms of giving us its wider context.
The précis of ‘On Photography’ was very interesting and a good resource, it could have benefited from some personal information such as the groups opinion of the piece. For future reference we feel this piece would be of interest in informing our research for our own projects.
Précis of Against Interpretation and Other Essays – We felt the information was a little too brief as the main focus is only on one of Sontag’s essays: ‘Camp.’ We didn’t understand much from the slide alone as to what these works were really about.
The précis of ‘Alice In Bed’ was as informative as needed. It seems a compelling play and something which we would be interested in looking at in more depth This is also a fair point for the final précis of ‘In America’
We found the strongest part of the resource pack was the summary of key terms and ideas and the summary of key influences and effects. It did intrigue us to want to look at Susan's work and feel she was a very interesting character.
For the last page on an account of what these ideas might mean for culture / performance / scenography /society/the body, the sentences at times we found to be a little clumsily formed, however the section which speaks about Sontag's work ‘on photography’ shows a greater knowledge as it talks about relationships, interpretations and influential ways of working which we found on the whole very informative.
