  • Matt Aimonetti Matt Aimonetti commented on Rails3: Stepping off of the golden path @guest7136aac I was explaining that with the new potential of Rails3, we can hope for a new generation of desktop application. Imagine a native desktop application written in Ruby with Rails and something like CouchDB embedded. You could develop p2p applications communicating between each others and with a central server. Because Rails is now able to be bent in a lot of new interesting ways, we can easily imagine new ways of using this powerful and awesome framework. If you had on top of that the fact that new Ruby implementation seems to improve speed and memory consumption, I think we will discover lots of new interesting way to leverage the Rails power. 7 months ago

  • Matt Aimonetti Matt Aimonetti commented on CouchDB @claymation luckily, this is not the only option. Loads of people agree with you and use static JS view files that the get loaded by the model. 7 months ago

  • Matt Aimonetti Matt Aimonetti commented on CouchDB @guested7c941 I didn’t mean to offend anyone. As I said many times before, I didn’t/don’t get how using a porn metaphor is misogynistic. I also apologized to people I offended. If you feel gang raped because of some slides with sexual connotation, I’m really sorry for you. Note that I actually warned people before starting my talk, so people were free to walk away. 7 months ago
  • Matt Aimonetti Matt Aimonetti commented on CouchDB @dcaron this is the internet, believe it or not, freedom of speech is valued here and nobody forces anyone to look at my slides. As mentioned many times earlier, I don’t think my presentation is inappropriate. I’m trying really hard to not be rude but a minority of very angry people seems to have a hard time just letting it go. 7 months ago
  • Matt Aimonetti Matt Aimonetti commented on CouchDB @guest201c60 thanks for your comment. In all honestly, I doubt the crowd was shocked since they voted for the talk. (the Gogaruco organization submitted a list of talks to the attendees who then voted for the talks they wanted to hear) Regarding what’s conference material and what’s not, I guess we will have to agree to disagree. (check DHH, Chris Wansrath or Obie Fernandez talks for instance) My personal take is that the organizers should filter based on their own concept of a conference, and the audience should be warned about the material being used. The title was very explicit and so was the description. I don’t believe the audience was that surprised since, again, they picked the talk. 7 months ago
  • Matt Aimonetti Matt Aimonetti commented on CouchDB @guest3027999 Thanks for your comment. "You probably just didn’t think of how it might make any women in your audience feel." I actually did and talked with my wife about it while preparing the talk. "Maybe you didn’t even notice or imagine that there might _be_ any women in your audience." I actually knew of some women that was planning on coming to the conference. "And no, i’m not making any statement about whether or not women enjoy porn, about the goodness or badness of the industry itself, etc." I actually think that porn is pretty degrading to people enjoying it, which apparently means, mainly men not women. My talk was certainly controversial but I don’t consider it to be sexist. It was meant as a joke. Something based on hearing people talking about "hiring rock stars" and people who claim they want to become porn stars. Yes it was a marketing stunt, but there is nothing new in doing that. Actually, the image you see on the first slide is from a very famous European ad campaign. "I’m just noting that as a female ruby developer, this is not what I want to see at conferences I attend." And I do respect that and took note of it. I certainly did not expect everybody to enjoy the talk and I was just trying to be entertaining while addressing a technical topic. I could have certainly chosen another topic that would have probably generated less reactions. However, because I think that controversial talks are entertaining, whatever topic you choose with create some sort of reactions and that’s honestly what you want as a speaker. I just hope that most people enjoyed the presentation and learned more about this great documented oriented database called couchdb. I certainly can’t force people to agree with me that porn != sexism. And I’m certainly sorry that few people got offended by the talk and I hope these people will understand that I’m not encouraging people to become a real porn star, and that I’m not considering women as sexual objects great for marketing. Finally, there are a lot of talks in conference that I’d prefer not to hear, does that mean I can blame the speakers or conference organizers for the reduced amount of women, hispanics, native americans and blacks in the community? - Matt 7 months ago
  • Matt Aimonetti Matt Aimonetti commented on CouchDB @robevans thanks for calling and explaining your view point. @guest3cb486 the talk was meant as a joke and it was chosen by the conference audience. While I see how you can find the talk inappropriate, I would like to encourage you to think outside the box. Nevertheless, my goal was not to shock anyone or force you to watch at "inappropriate" content. This topic was meant as a joke and I’m sorry if it goes against your personal values. 7 months ago
