Genre in film

 1. 1. Genre in Film Nick, Jon, Lewis, pemce Matt
 2. 2. Genre

Genre is a way of categorising texts.

A way of defining codes and conventions for a category of text.

A way of setting up audience expectations and targeting a particular group.

Genre theory is generally considered to have developed as a result of Andre Basin’s work on Westerns in the 1950s.

Genres make film making more efficient in the way that plots, sets etc can be used for different projects.

It is argued that genres are usually defined in terms either of certain media language or certain ideologies and narratives.

 3. 3. Genre Theory

Robert Stam – ‘ Is there a finite taxonomy of genres or are they in principle infinite?’ Stam is saying here that is genre a static object which cannot be changed (e.g. the genres that are there now cannot be changed.) or is there a possibility of new genres.

Gledhill - ‘To take a genre such as the 'western', analyse it, and list its principal characteristics, is to beg the question that we must first isolate the body of films which are 'westerns'. But they can only be isolated on the basis of the 'principal characteristics' which can only be discovered from the films themselves after they have been isolated.’ This is explaining that to classify a specific genre you need to find key characteristics, you must have already categorized it under a specific genre. (e.g. to know western you must first have an opinion of what western is.)

 4. 4. Comedy

Comedy is a genre in film in which the main emphasis is on humour. Also films in this style typically have a happy ending. One of the oldest genres in film, some of the very first silent movies were comedies.

 5. 5. The Other Guys

The Other Guys Trailer

Starts unconventionally-action, first glimpse of comedy with unusual crash. Spoofs the genre of action.

Voiceover sets the situation.

Contrast between bad boy cops and ‘the other guys’.

Familiarises itself with conventional actor (Will Farrell)

Titles of conventional comedy actors and previous comedy successes.

Comical music plays throughout the action scenes.

Punch lines are frequently showed and music stops on delivery. Jokes are emphasised.

 6. 6. Horror

Horror fiction is a genre of literature, which is intended to, or has the capacity to scare its viewers, inducing feelings or horror and terror. Horror can either be supernatural or non-supernatural. These can be sub-genres of Horror.

 7. 8. Mirrors

Mirrors Trailer

Always starts promising. Music. Family together.

Establishing shot of building signifies horror.

Builds to a climax-tension builds throughout. Equilibrium is formed.

- music builds

- pace/frequency of clips (conventional to horror)

- sounds are amplified.

The voiceover uses quotes from the film. Synchronised with images puts us in the film.

Dark atmosphere-conveys negativity.

When action starts to unfold, succession is more frequent and music/sounds are amplified.

Previews some gory scenes as a taster.

Supernatural horror-ghosts, figures in the mirrors.
