    • Germany Invades Poland (believed the allies would do nothing)
    • BlitzKrieg: Lightning War
    • Technology does not allow for Trench Warfare

    • France and England issue an ultimatum to Germany to withdraw
    • War is Declared on Germany
    • Non aggression Pact
    • Sept 17, USSR Invades Poland from the East
    • - reclaim land lost in 1917
    • Poland surrenders Sept.19

    • The silent war between Oct 1939 and April 1940.
    • France & Great Britain mobilize their troops
  • 6. The Lowlands
    • April 1940 Germany invades Denmark, takes it in days.
    • Norway :
    • invaded and occupied.
    • All were needed for an invasion of France and Great Britain to occur
  • 7. French Plan: defense
    • Thought Germans would invade through Belgium
    • (just like 1914)
  • 8. French Defense: The Maginot Line
    • France’s main defenses along German border
    • 100s of Miles of underground fortifications built in the 1930s.
    • (WWI Mentality)
  • 9. German Plan: Attack
    • Fake an attack through Belgium
    • Real attack was to come from the South and in the Alsace Forest
  • 10. The War in the West
    • May 9th 1940 Germany invades Belgium.
    • French and British troops take the bait and head north to Belgium
    • Real attack then goes through the Arden, north of Maginot Line, May 10th
  • 11. Dunkirk
    • By June 1st 1940 the Allied armies were surrounded by the Germans out side the French port town of Dunkirk.
    • Allied Troops Barely escaped to England.
    • 338,000 Allies saved
  • 12. Paris
    • June 14th Paris is occupied by Germany
    • VT is avenged!
    • June 14th The Maginot Line is taken by the Germans
  • 13. French Surrender: June 21, 1940
    • French ask for an Armistice and sign surrender.
    • Hitler is leader of the German delegation
    • The same railroad car that Germany signed the Armistice of 1918 in, was used! Ironic?
  • 14. June 24, 1940 Hitler visits Paris
  • 15.  
  • 16. The Battle for Britain July-Oct 1940
  • 17. The planned invasion of Great Britain
    • Hitler had most of Europe and now wanted to take England.
    • He needed controls of the sky first!
  • 18.  
  • 19. British advantages
    • The whole empire was at war: Australia, Canada, India, South Africa, and New Zealand
    • (just to name a few)
    • Radar
    • Home turf

  • 21. A most desperate time for the British
    • German bombers hit airfields and major cities. Ex: London
    • Civilians are now targets of war.
