Invasion of Poland <ul><li>France and England issue an ultimatum to Germany to withdraw </li></ul><ul><li>War is Declared on Germany </li></ul><ul><li>Non aggression Pact </li></ul><ul><li>Sept 17, USSR Invades Poland from the East </li></ul><ul><li>- reclaim land lost in 1917 </li></ul><ul><li>Poland surrenders Sept.19 </li></ul>

  5. 6. The Lowlands <ul><li>April 1940 Germany invades Denmark, takes it in days. </li></ul><ul><li>Norway : </li></ul><ul><li>invaded and occupied. </li></ul><ul><li>All were needed for an invasion of France and Great Britain to occur </li></ul>

  7. 8. French Defense: The Maginot Line <ul><li>France’s main defenses along German border </li></ul><ul><li>100s of Miles of underground fortifications built in the 1930s. </li></ul><ul><li>(WWI Mentality) </li></ul>
  8. 9. German Plan: Attack <ul><li>Fake an attack through Belgium </li></ul><ul><li>Real attack was to come from the South and in the Alsace Forest </li></ul>
  9. 10. The War in the West <ul><li>May 9th 1940 Germany invades Belgium. </li></ul><ul><li>French and British troops take the bait and head north to Belgium </li></ul><ul><li>Real attack then goes through the Arden, north of Maginot Line, May 10th </li></ul>
  10. 11. Dunkirk <ul><li>By June 1st 1940 the Allied armies were surrounded by the Germans out side the French port town of Dunkirk. </li></ul><ul><li>Allied Troops Barely escaped to England. </li></ul><ul><li>338,000 Allies saved </li></ul>
  11. 12. Paris <ul><li>June 14th Paris is occupied by Germany </li></ul><ul><li>VT is avenged! </li></ul><ul><li>June 14th The Maginot Line is taken by the Germans </li></ul>
  12. 13. French Surrender: June 21, 1940 <ul><li>French ask for an Armistice and sign surrender. </li></ul><ul><li>Hitler is leader of the German delegation </li></ul><ul><li>The same railroad car that Germany signed the Armistice of 1918 in, was used! Ironic? </li></ul>

  14. 16. The Battle for Britain July-Oct 1940
  15. 17. The planned invasion of Great Britain <ul><li>Hitler had most of Europe and now wanted to take England. </li></ul><ul><li>He needed controls of the sky first! </li></ul>
  16. 19. British advantages <ul><li>The whole empire was at war: Australia, Canada, India, South Africa, and New Zealand </li></ul><ul><li>(just to name a few) </li></ul><ul><li>Radar </li></ul><ul><li>Home turf </li></ul>
  17. 21. A most desperate time for the British <ul><li>German bombers hit airfields and major cities. Ex: London </li></ul><ul><li>Civilians are now targets of war. </li></ul>
  18. 25. British Victory <ul><li>Sept 17th 1940 Hitler calls off invasion plans </li></ul><ul><li>First real defeat of Germany </li></ul><ul><li>An invasion of Great Britain will not happen </li></ul><ul><li>Hitler looks for another target……… </li></ul>
